Hill Ravages Panthers

Olympian Jo Hill chose the elimination final to produce her best game of the year, helping North Adelaide to a 15 point victory against South Adelaide.

In a frantic first quarter, North raced to an early 10 point lead, keeping South to 12 for the quarter. The pace didn't slow in the second, with North racking up 41 points by half time, 19 of which came from Panther turnovers.

The Rockets were tenatious on the boards, winning that battle 28-16 in the first half alone. The effort levels were typified by one play phase in which North pulled down three offensive rebounds and when Jo Hill converted the turnaround jump shot to end the offence, South looked deflated. Sarah Peddle hit an 18 foot jump shot from after an effective on-ball screen, but Tania Dhu's layup after a South turnover sent North into the half time break up 41-25. Hill had already scored 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting and South desperately needed a plan to shut her down.

Everyone in the stadium was aware that North had blown a larger lead the week before and coach Mike McKay was determined not to repeat the process. Hill started the third quarter in the same form as the first, with another turnaround jump shot after Lauren Mansfield tipped her an offensive rebound, but South started to show some signs of life. Jenine Browne hit a 10 footer and Kerrin Truslove converted two free throws to keep the margin below 20. When Sarah Peddle followed a three pointer with an 18' jumper, McKay was forced to call a time out to stem the tide.

In what was to be her last Central ABL game, Vikki Kelson hit a jump shot from the block and when Jenny Carberry drew a charge on Dhu, the lead was back to 15. Janelle Ridley had a huge block on Jamie-Lee Peris and South went into the fourth quarter with a head of steam.

Peris started the quarter with a 3 point play after a great feed from Kristi Ollino, and North again blew out the lead. South stopped a run by forcing a shot clock violation, and over the next three minutes, Jo Robbertson hit a mid-range shot, Sarah Peddle drove for a layup, then assisted Kerrin Truslove for a 3point play on transition. The margin was 12 with 6 minutes to go, and the Hillcrest crowd was having flashbacks.

The South comeback was not to happen. Lauren Mansfield's banked three pointer was reminiscent of Rupert Sapwell, who coincidentally was just about to enter the stadium. Teams traded basket for the next four minutes and when Tania Dhu made a layup through traffic to increase the margin to 17, the game was all but over.

It finished at 69-54. North's victory was set up by a superior start to the game, and an ability to counter every South run. Hill finished with 30 points at 50% and 13 rebounds, and was a step above anyone on the court. Mansfield was the only other Rocket in double figures, with 11 points, and Jess Keller and Tania Dhu eache had 12 rebounds. For South, Sarah Peddle and Jenine Browne had 11 points, and despite Browne's 7 rebounds, North won the battle of the boards 65-36.

The loss for South saw the end of the careers of Vikki Kelson and Jenni Carberry. North's win means they survive for a knockout semi final against Norwood to kick off a double header at Mars next Saturday night.
