Women's Previews - Round 4

Sam Woosnam

Eastern Mavericks v Sturt Sabres, Sat. March 31, 6:30pm at Adelaide Hills

Sturt are undefeated and heading for a year like 2006. Returning all players but Sonia Dametto and with Perth Lynx guard Angela Marino in MVP form, Sturt upset league favourites West last Saturday and followed up with a tough win against in-form Southern. Eastern split games against Woodville and North but with Jane Symons playing with newfound aggression and Amanda Williams in good form, expect the Mavericks to make this game a decent contest. Monique Bowley had a great game against West, and with sisters Hannah and Brigid, Sturt's front court should be too strong for Eastern.

South Adelaide Panthers v Woodville Warriors, Sat. March 31, 6:30pm at Marion

The Panthers are the other undefeated team in the women's league, although their two wins were against a Forestville group minus Dee Ranford, and a young Norwood. Even so, Glenn Shaw has his team working well together and the addition of Kerrin Truslove provides an extra 10 rebounds per game. Woodville put up a strong fight against Southern in round 1, and were it not for a disastrous 4-23 first quarter against Eastern, they may well have held their own in this game too. Jodie Barratt and Brooke Sidebottom are close to averaging a double double, and Brooke Gathercole is also in good form. Expect Jenine Browne and Truslove to dominate, but look for the athletic Vanessa Michael to contribute at both ends.

North Adelaide Rockets v Forestville Eagles, Sat. March 31, 6:30pm at Hillcrest

In any other year, this game would be a blockbuster, but both Forestville and North are fielding younger teams this year. With the retirement of Narelle Lindsay, point guard Kelsey Ireland has been promoted to the starting lineup, and inside-outside threat Kate Malpass joins the team from WA. North also have a younger group to accompany Tania Dhu, Ali Trewartha and Erin Lorenzini, but North's depth gives them an edge against most opponents - Mike McKay has 11 players averaging at least 10 minutes per game. Lauren Mansfield is shooting and organising well, and former Northern Territory center Jamie-Lee Peris is contributing on the boards. Former Rocket Emma Pawlawski will be keen to perform against her former club, and expect a great matchup between Lightning teammates Dee Ranford and Lorenzini. When these two teams met in the Metro League Grand Final, Forestville won with a team of juniors, but with full lineups, North should be too good.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Norwood Flames, Sun. April 1, 6:00pm at Port Adelaide

On paper, West field the best team in the comp, however the game isn't won on paper. Despite fielding a side which includes Sam Woosnam and Lauren King, West have two losses to their name and will be determined to get their first win on Sunday evening. Norwood are definite underdogs, but a number of Flame juniors will be better for the court time they've had in the first two weeks. 15 year old Cara Boothey scored 13 points in 17 minutes against Sturt and Kim Olsen had 10 in 17 minutes against South. They'll do it tough against some of the best players in the competition, and would have higher expectations of success later in the season than earlier.
