Thompson, Fergus propel Eagles to Third Straight Win

Thompson, who’s previous best was 21 points, also had 11 rebounds, while Jess Fergus (19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists) was in the thick of everything.

Slow starts have been a feature of the 2013 Warriors and the story in this one was no different.

The Eagles built a 14-2 lead inside the opening seven minutes, with Thompson scoring two field goals and making two free throws.

With Jasmine Howe connecting from both outside and inside the arc, the Warriors closed the gap to 11-18 by quarter-time and then when Howe scored her sixth and seventh points from the foul-line, the Warriors were within five and things appeared to be turning for the better.

However, the Warriors’ challenge was quickly snuffed out with Fergus and Thompson combining for the next seven points, restoring a 12 points buffer for the visitors.

The Eagles led by 15 at half-time, before scoring 16 straight points to open the period, Danielle Angley and Thompson scoring 6 apiece.

With a lead in excess of 30 points, the Eagles were able to clear the bench a little earlier than usual, joining Sturt, Eastern and North with a 6-2 record.

Tara Robinson added 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks for the Eagles, who shot 48 per cent from the field and had a +15 edge in rebounds.

Katherine Perkas (13 points, 5/5 FG, 7 rebounds) was effective for the home side, while Howe had 11 points and Claire Christie 10.

The Warriors (2-6) travel to Morphett Vale next week to take on the Tigers, who have an identical record. The Eagles host unbeaten Norwood.
