Women's Preview - Round 5 ANZAC Day Clash

Forestville Eagles (2-1, 4th) v Central District Lions (0-3, 10th)
Thursday April 25, 3.00pm at Wayville

The Forestville Eagles will be hoping to get their season back on track when they host the winless Central District Lions on Anzac Day.

After leading Sturt 19-15 at quarter-time in their Round 4 match at Wayville, the Eagles got worse as the game went on, eventually going down 56-71. They were outscored 7-17 in the fourth quarter.

Mia Newley and Olivia Thompson each posted a double-double and combined for 36 points on 16/34 shooting and 20 rebounds, which was statistically the star duo’s best output so far. However, the remainder of the team totalled just 20 points on 8/34 shooting and 17 rebounds.

While the Eagles may have let themselves down against their closest rivals, the Lions have been poor the last two games after a competitive effort against the Sabres. The Lions have been outscored by a total of 69 points the last two weeks by the Tigers and Mavericks, both of whom they finished higher than in 2012.

The Mavericks cracked three figures against the Lions, the first club to do so in the women’s competition this season. While Tamika Dukes (28 points, 11 rebounds) and Brianna Wedding (13 points, 13 rebounds) each posted double-figures, the remainder of the Lions tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The last time the Eagles met the Lions was in last season’s First Semi Final. On that night, the Eagles won 100-44.

On the Lions’ form, if the Eagles can get back to their best, another century is not out of the equation.
