Men's Game Previews - Round 12

Woodville Warriors v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, June 19th, 8.15pm at St Clair
Woodville are coming off two away wins and will hope to record its second win at home this season when it takes on the Panthers, who have lost their last two matches to league pace setters Norwood and Sturt. When the sides last met in round 3, South were too strong, setting up the win with a big second quarter when they outpaced the Warriors 34 – 17. On that occasion South's Sammy Gazzo finished as game high scorer with 26 points, and he was also the team's top scorer last round against the Sabres, finishing with 16 points. Woodville had Brady Brink in top form when they defeated the Eagles before the break - he finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors' 188cm guard Ben McKay also had his best return for the season when he finished with 19 points including five 3s, and he will look to repeat that form in this match. Mathematically both clubs can still make the playoffs but for whichever team loses this weekend, it could spell disaster for a finals berth.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Central District Lions, Sat, June 19th, 8.15pm at Port Adelaide
With Centrals on a seven game losing run, it is highly unlikely that they will win against the Bearcats, though if that were to happen it would no doubt be the biggest upset of the season.  West won the first encounter by only 10 points, 79 – 69.  After the Lions regrouped in the second quarter, outscoring West 25 – 15 to level the scores at halftime, the Bearcats won the 3rd and 4th quarters to claim the victory. In that game West centre Chris Molitor bagged 32 points to record his highest score for the season, and he will again be a prominent player. Last game the Lions had a slow start against the Flames and they will need to start this game well if they are to have any chance of success. West has been strengthened since the Lions match by the inclusion of Brad Davidson who is averaging 16.0 ppg. With Kurtis Phillips, Anthony Spadavecchia, Davidson and Molitor the Bearcats have a depth of scoring options which should prove too much for the Lions to combat. Matthew Clarke, Wade Pidock and Zane Reeves for the Lions have returned good numbers at times this season, and they all need to do that this match if they are to record an unexpected victory.

North Adelaide Rockets v Forestville Eagles, Sat, June 19th, 8.15pm at Hillcrest
A win this round would allow North to equal the number of wins it recorded in 2009, but more importantly would almost guarantee them a finals berth with only 6 minor round games left after this weekend. Eagles coach Andy Simons is under pressure to arrest the slide as Forestville would record their fourth loss in a row if they drop this match against the Rockets. Last round against the Warriors, the Eagles started well but in a 2 point loss 76 – 74 let victory slip from their grasp with a disappointing third quarter when they were outscored 25 – 16. North won the first 3 quarters against Southern and were narrowly outscored in the last as both coaches rotated their bench players. With North's Pero Vasilijevic and Nick Hambour both scoring freely last round, it is difficult to predict that the Eagles will have the height to combat the strength and scoring ability of these two players. For the Eagles to have any chance of victory import Riley Luettgerodt, Brad Gerlach, Brad Sullivan and Doug MacDonald-Taylor will need to front with their best games of the season.

Southern Tigers v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, June 19th, 8.15pm at Morphett Vale
Will Southern record their first victory at home this season at the expense of Eastern? Eastern Coach Steve Breheny will hope that is not the case. Eastern are still a slim chance to make the finals if results fall their way whereas for Southern, they have slipped back from their form of season 2009 when they recorded 7 wins. For the majority of games so far this season the Tigers have relied upon Tristan Braithwaite, Brandon Brine, Shane Boal and Michael Florence to do the bulk of the scoring but between them it has not been enough to post winning scores. Eastern will rely upon Brad Hill, Shane Breheny, Jordan Dodman and Ben Madgen to do the majority of their scoring. Which quartet produces the biggest numbers will probably decide which team wins the contest. With so much at stake for Eastern it is difficult to predict that Southern will break their run of outs. Eastern won the first encounter with an even four quarter performance. Will it be the same this match or will Southern record its first win at home?

Norwood Flames v Sturt Sabres, Sat, June 19th, 8.15pm at Mars
Norwood suffered their heaviest loss of the season when they last played the Sabres in Round 3, losing 83 – 59. On that occasion, Sturt were without the services of Marcus Ng and Jacob Holmes, while Norwood had David Cooper and Keith Krause missing with injury. The Flames are expected to be a full strength for this encounter but the Sabres may have a number of key players missing due to overseas commitments. With both teams sitting on 9 wins the victor could be in a position to claim outright top spot at the conclusion of this contest. The Sabres will be keen to win again to keep the head to head advantage which may prove beneficial at the end of the minor round. Norwood is currently the form side of the men's Competition winning its past 6 matches to equal Sturt's run from Round 3 until it suffered only its second loss of the season against North Adelaide in Round 9. With an even spread of scorers in their win against the Panthers, Norwood looks capable of inflicting the third defeat on the Sabres. Sturt is almost assured of a double – double from Jacob Holmes but his side may struggle to find other consistent avenues of scoring if the team enters the match undermanned.
