Men's Game Reviews - Round 11

Sturt Sabres v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, June 5th, 8.15pm at Pasadena
Sturt won the first 3 quarters of the contest and were never in trouble after establishing a   12 point margin to begin the second quarter. In the early part of the second quarter, the Panthers had begun to chip away at the lead before a 3 pointer to Jacob Holmes and two 3 pointers to Jan Warbout blew the margin out to 18 points 49 – 31. After the halftime break, both teams freely rotated their players but the Panthers were unable to make any headway in decreasing the margin. At the conclusion of the match the Sabres' Jacob Holmes again finished with a double – double (22 points and 14 rebounds) and Thomas Daly was not far behind him with 18 points. The Panthers' Sammy Gazzo finished as South's top scorer with 16 points and still maintains an average of 23.1ppg for this season having played all 11 games. The Panthers' loss relegates them to 8th place, while Sturt remains level on points with West Adelaide and Norwood at the top of the table.

Norwood Flames v Central Districts Lions, Sat, June 5th, 8.15pm at Mars
The Norwood Flames put the game out of reach early with a blistering first quarter onslaught in which they racked up 30 points, while only allowing the Lions to register 10. Norwood had seven scorers in the first quarter demolition of the Lions. As the game wore on the Lions fell further behind and after a basket to Josh Krake (Norwood) late in the second quarter, the margin had increased to 33 points, 51 – 18. When the Flames' Andrew Webber hit a 3 pointer to end the third period, the gap had widened further to 45 points, 78 – 33. In the last quarter, Norwood's Jack Jennings scored with 2.43 left on the clock and the margin was then at 49 points, 92 – 43, the biggest break of the game. Norwood has now strung together 6 wins on the trot while at the opposite end of the spectrum, the Lions have lost their last 7 matches - this loss their heaviest defeat of the season.

Forestville Eagles v Woodville Warriors, Sat, June 5th, 8.15pm at Wayville
Woodville claimed their biggest scalp of the season when they defeated Forestville with a big third quarter after they fell behind by as many as 12 points in the first quarter. The Eagles were on fire in the first from outside the arc with guard Brad Sullivan connecting on four 3 pointers and Doug McDonald Taylor chipping in with 1. Both teams scored 15 points in the second quarter but the Warriors put themselves back in the contest with a 25 – 16 third period to be up by a basket at the last break 60 – 58. Import Brady Brink (Warriors) exerted his influence on the result with a blistering opening in the last quarter, scoring 10 points in the opening minutes on his way to a game high 29 points. Ben McKay helped himself to two 3 pointers to keep the Eagles' challenge at bay. Scott Arnold (Eagles) connected on a pair of foul shots with 1.05 left to reduce the margin to just 2 points but in the desperate last seconds, neither side was able to score. Brad Sullivan launched a 3 point shot with 1 second remaining to win the match but he missed giving the Warriors the all important victory to keep their slim finals hopes alive.  The Eagles hold onto 5th spot and have fallen two games behind North as a result of the loss.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, June 5th, 8.15pm at Port Adelaide
West Adelaide, with 3 wins in succession, were keen to add their 4th to the tally when they took on the Eastern Mavericks at home. On the first occasion the two sides met in Round 1, West Adelaide inflicted a 31 point loss on the Mavericks and in this match West Adelaide again showed their superiority. In the last 7 minutes of the second quarter when they pushed the ball up the floor they were able to take control of the game and set up victory. Eastern failed to restrict West's NBL experienced players in Brad Davidson, Blake Truslove and Chris Molitor, who created the most problems for the Mavericks with their ability to score and create opportunities for others. West won the first 3 quarters of the game and were only outscored in the last when both coaches elected to run their benches – at that time the result was well in the hands of the Bearcats.

North Adelaide Rockets v Southern Tigers, Sat, June 5th, 8.15pm at Hillcrest
The twin towers of North Adelaide proved too much for the Tigers to overcome when Pero Vasilijevic (26 points) and Nick Hambour (24 points) combined for more than half of the Rockets' score. Hambour and Vasilijevic were amongst the points early, both scoring in the first quarter - Vasilijevic put together the last 8 points of the period including a 3 pointer to give the home side a 4 point break at the first change. With guard Joel Goodenough on song in the first half, the Tigers only trailed by 6 points at halftime - Goodenough scoring all his 15 points in the first half. As the 3rd quarter wore on, North gradually extended the margin and after a pair of converted free throws by Leif Burdon, North held a 20 point lead 67 – 47. From that point of the game, Tristan Braithwaite, who finished with 25 points, knocked down five 3 pointers but it wasn't enough for the Tigers to threaten and claim an upset victory. Hambour and Vasilijevic continued to amass points in the last quarter and although the Tigers were able close the margin slightly, North still cruised to victory. North now holds a four game break over Woodville and Eastern, and a place in the finals is now almost guaranteed.
