Women's Game Previews - Round 11

Sturt Sabres v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, June 5th, 6.30pm at Pasadena
Sturt will be looking to repeat their form from round 1 when they beat the Panthers by 22 points (66-44). On that occasion, Sturt had an even four quarter performance and the Panthers let themselves down badly in the 3rd quarter when they could only muster 4 points to Sturt's 16. Last week against the ever improving Flames, South were competitive for 4 quarters and in fact led in the last quarter after 3 point shots to Ursula Richards and game high scorer Claire Johnson (28 points). Sturt's undoing in their first loss of the season was their opening quarter when they were outscored 20 – 9 and also the last quarter when they were only able to connect on three baskets for the period. If Claire Johnson can produce the same numbers and the Sabres' big three scorers in Caroline Burgess, Monique Bowley and Bree Farley can be contained then Sturt could find themselves in trouble. It looks highly unlikely that they will be staring at their second loss of the season.

Norwood Flames v Central Districts Lions, Sat, June 5th, 6.30pm at Mars
It is difficult to predict that the Lions will even be competitive in this encounter. Norwood is building towards the business end of the season with the team now sitting in outright 3rd position after their win against the Panthers. That win now leaves them only two games adrift of top position. Although the Flames took until the last quarter to seal their result against the Panthers, they achieved that without the services of leading scorer Jess Foley. For the Lions, Amber Land (15.2ppg and 12 rpg) has been an outstanding recruit; she has had double digit score in 9 of the 10 matches she has played this season. At times, Lions trio Dayna Roberts, Fiona Perso and Elizabeth Oermann have all produced good numbers. They need to produce their best this game if they are to avoid the thumping that the team endured last time these two sides met when they suffered a 56 point hammering - their heaviest loss  of the season (108 – 56 ). The Flames should record their 5th win in a row by a big margin.

Forestville Eagles v Woodville Warriors, Sat, June 5th, 6.30pm at Wayville
For the second week in succession, Forestville supporters should have plenty to cheer about at the conclusion of this match with the 2nd placed Eagles playing the 8th placed Warriors. For Eagles coach Sharon Simons there is too much to lose if her team does comes up short and fails to register their 9th win of the season. Forestville, with the best percentage in the League (135%), has a number of players who are capable of posting big numbers. Jess Mahony, Jess Fergus, Mia Newley and Kelsey Ireland all got amongst the points in their hard fought win against the Bearcats last round and they should do the same this week. Woodville surpassed the two wins they recorded in season 2009 with their defeat of the Lions at Starplex last match, MacKenzie O'Neil top scoring with 20 points. Woodville surprised many with their win over the Rockets but it is not expected that they will record another upset this round.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, June 5th, 6.30pm at Port Adelaide
Both clubs will be keen for a result this weekend, the Bearcats coming off a loss against the Eagles and the Mavericks coming off a loss against North. West will rely on Nikita-Lee Martin, Trudy Holland, Irene Sourlatzis and Ashlea Vordermaier to do the bulk of the scoring as they did last week against the Eagles, when that group scored 66 of team's total of 71 points. West is again expected to be without the services of Sam Woosnam and Kerrin Webber.  Junior Cody Lange will not be available for the Mavericks.  Eastern would benefit from having a better spread of scorers rather than relying on Tess Madgen (32.2ppg) and Alex Wilson (17.5ppg in four matches since returning from State and Australian Junior commitments) to do the bulk of the scoring. Like the Tigers – Rockets match, this one has plenty riding on it, a finals berth the big incentive to win.

North Adelaide Rockets v Southern Tigers, Sat, June 5th, 6.30pm at Hillcrest
Rockets coach Mike McKay would have been pleased to walk away with the points after the encounter last week against the Mavericks where North was challenged throughout the contest. North's outside shooters did the damage, particularly in the third quarter when they set up a mini break of 11 points. For Tigers Coach Willie Jennette his team set up the win against the top placed Sabres with a dominant first and last quarter performance. When the sides last met, North won by 3 points (80 – 77). Since that time they have lost Carla Boyd to injury but that has been offset by the inclusion of Jo Hill and Tania Dhu who are both major play makers for the team. North needs the victory if it is to stay in the top 5 ahead of the chasing pack. A win by Southern by at least 4 points will see them replace North and climb into the top five for the first time this season.
