Men's Game Previews - Round 10

Darren Ng

Eastern Mavericks v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Mount Barker
Both teams rejoined the winners' circle last round in similar circumstances - Eastern recovering from a defecit in the early part of the second quarter and the Rockets having their best quarter of the night when they outscored the Sabres 21 – 10, also in the second. The matchup of Pero Vasiljevic (North) and Jordan Dodman (Eastern) will be worth the cost of an admission ticket with Vasiljevic in outstanding form with a double double of 27 points and 11 rebounds in only his second match back from overseas. For Eastern, Ben Madgen proved the surprise packet stepping off the plane from America Thursday and producing a game high score of 26 points against the Warriors 48 hours later. Last time the two sides met, Luke Mapunda was the Rockets' high scorer with 15 points but has not played for a number of weeks. Eastern have been strengthened by the inclusion of Brad Hill and Madgen but the combination of Nick Hambour and Vasiljevic will take some stopping.

Forestville Eagles v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Wayville
Only 1 point separated the two sides when they met in Round 2 and it would not surprise if this clash goes down to the wire. The Eagles will be keen to erase last week's loss against Norwood from memory. The numbers that Riley Luettgerodt (Eagles) produces could hold the key - in all but three games this season he has produced more than 24 points but against the Flames had his lowest return of 13 points. The guards for both teams (Forestville's Brad Sullivan and Brad Gerlach and West Adelaide's Brad Davidson and Kurtis Phillips) have all been in good form, and whoever wins that duel could well influence the result, with the West pair bagging 38 points in the win against the Tigers. Chris Molitor (West) who is averaging 21ppg and 7 rebounds could be the trump card ,as he has been in superb touch.

Central Districts Lions v Woodville Warriors, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Starplex
Woodville's form on paper looks to be superior to that of Centrals but if recent clashes have been any indication, this match like others this round may well not be decided until late in the last quarter. Both imports - Wade Pidock (Lions) and Brady Brink (Warriors) - had identical numbers last match, finishing with 9 points and 8 rebounds, and they will both be looking for an improvement in this game. Centrals' shooters will need to find their target if they are to break their 5 game losing streak, they have shown at times during the season that they are capable of posting big numbers. Woodville proved last week against the Mavericks that they are capable of hitting big shots from outside if they are given room. Late in the first quarter and early in the second they hit seven 3 pointers in 6 minutes of play almost setting up a match winning break. Will the outside shooting of either side be the difference in this game?

South Adelaide Panthers v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Marion
When Norwood defeated South in Round 2 by 7 points (79 – 72) the result left the Flames in 5th place and the Panthers in 6th. Since that time, Norwood has moved up the ladder to 3rd after their defeat of the Eagles last week and although South defeated the Lions, they have dropped to 7th as the season has progressed. In this game, South will be fielding a similar line-up but Norwood has been improved by the inclusion of David Cooper (16.3ppg and 11.7rpg) who now has 3 games under his belt and Keith Krause who has played 6 games after returning from injury. If South's Steve Pilkington, Adam Blight and Tom McKenzie can produce the numbers to offset the expected influence of David Cooper then this contest may be closer than anticipated. Norwood are now showing the form that saw them go all the way in 2009, whereas South have improved to already equal their 3 wins from last season, though it is still difficult to see them take the points in this encounter.

Southern Tigers v Sturt Sabres, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Morphett Vale
With a tough month coming up in June, Sturt Coach Scott Butler will be looking for his charges to reverse the result from the earlier meeting this year when the Tigers were successful by 4 points (78 -74) at Pasadena. That victory was earned when the Tigers outscored the Sabres in the second half. Little separated the two sides on the night but 183cm guard Shane Boal (Southern) had his best return for the season – 27 points at 45% which included five 3 pointers. The Sabres will be tough with the inclusion of Jacob Holmes who has produced a double double in every match so far this season since his return in round 6. The make-up of the sides is a little uncertain but Darren Ng (Sabres) is due for a big one after his quiet game in the loss against the Rockets last week. Sturt lost top spot and now sit second on percentage and will be looking to bounce back to reclaim that all important top spot.
