Women's Preview - Round 11

South Adelaide Panthers (0-10, 10th) v Sturt Sabres (8-2, 2nd)
Saturday June 22, 6.30pm at Marion

Fresh off two wins, Sturt will be hoping for a repeat of their Round 2 success against South Adelaide.

The Sabres cruised to an 82-56 win the last time they met the Panthers, in what was their second of five straight wins to start this season. All 12 Sabre players hit the scoresheet in that match, led by Hannah Bowley with 14 and Amy Shaw with 12.

Lauren Gibbons (13 points), Hajnal Nagy (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Teresa Kinross (11 points) did some damage for the Panthers.

The Sabres are back up to second on the ladder, though Eastern, North and Forestville are all hot on their heels. The Panthers are still without a win after going down to the Rockets last week.

The Panthers have not won at home for almost two years, and it would take a remarkable effort for them to go against the tide.

Norwood Flames (10-0, 1st) v Eastern Mavericks (8-2, 3rd)
Saturday June 22, 6.30pm at Mars

In the Match of the Round, the Norwood Flames will have a new Maverick to watch out for in their quest to win an 11th straight game.

In Round 10, with Tess Madgen out due to Opals commitments, 20 game player Jemma Thacker hit 16 of 20 shots en route to 39 points as the Mavericks overcame Woodville 77-73. Of the four players who have cracked 30 this season, only Olivia Thompson does not play for the Mavericks.

When the Flames met the Mavericks in Round 2, neither Madgen (16 points), Thacker (DNP) and the other 30 point Maverick Shannon Tarran (6 points) were able to make much of an impact. The Mavericks managed just 54 points as a team and lost by 36.

Jessica Good had a career best 24 points for the Flames, who also got excellent contributions from Jess Foley and Cara Boothey amongst others.

The Mavericks have been rampant since their last meeting with the Flames, winning seven of eight. If Madgen is back, they may pose the greatest chance of preventing the Flames going undefeated.

That being said, their chances are slim no matter what.

West Adelaide Bearcats (4-6, 6th) v Southern Tigers (2-8, 8th)
Saturday June 22, 6.30pm at Port Adelaide

With their season falling apart, the Bearcats desperately need a win over Southern to have any remote chance of pushing for a finals spot.

The only team to so much as challenge all-conquering Norwood, the Bearcats have really missed Jess Mahony and Desinta Cummins since they came within nine points of the Flames. Back-to-back losses to Sturt and Forestville have seen them fall three games back from the fourth and fifth spots.

The Tigers knocked three points off their previous loss to the Flames, while scoring 18 points more. However, they are on a six game losing streak and their final two months are about playing for pride.

Last time they met, Alana Nairn registered 15 points and 7 rebounds as the Bearcats cruised to an 86-50 win. Porter and Mahony each scored 10. Tiger Stana Zecevic was perhaps the best player on the court with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Ashley Biddell scored 10.

Expect the Bearcats to win again, but maybe not by so much.

Woodville Warriors (3-7, 7th) v North Adelaide Rockets (7-3, 5th)
Saturday June 22, 6.30pm at St Clair

North Adelaide can ill-afford to take the 3-7 Warriors lightly ahead of their Round 11 battle.

The Warriors almost caused a massive boilover in Round 2, though the Rockets got the buckets when it mattered in an 84-77 victory. Jo Hill and Jamie-Lee Peris combined for 42 points and 25 Rocket rebounds, while Tess Keenan, Jessica Koch, Jasmine Howe and Katherine Perkas all contributed to the Warriors’ cause.

Last week, the Warriors came close to taking advantage of Tess Madgen’s absence, going down to third ranked Eastern by just four points. They missed Perkas, but Keenan, Howe and Koch were again their leading scorers.

The Rockets are in fifth spot and are in a good position to make another run at a Grand Final. They comprehensively beat South last week.

Now well and truly up and about, the Rockets should have things a little easier this time.

Central District Lions (1-9, 9th) v Forestville Eagles (7-3, 4th)
Saturday June 22, 6.30pm at Starplex

The Eagles will be playing for a fifth away win in six tries when they visit the Lions.

The gold and blue’s only blemish on the road came against North at Hillcrest in Round 5. With Eastern facing the daunting task of taking on Norwood, the Eagles have a great chance to move into the top three if they can have a big win here.

The Lions have played some decent basketball in recent times, even producing a couple of good quarters against Sturt - although the final score is another they would want to forget about. Tamika Dukes continues to be a shining light, while they have a 100% winning record with Demi Skinner in the team (unfortunately for the Lions, skinner has only suited up once).

On Anzac Day, the Eagles ran away with an 87-36 victory, after leading 47-6 at half-time. Jess Fergus (24 points, 6 rebounds) and Olivia Thompson (21 points, 15 rebounds) had good games for the Eagles, while Dukes was held to 13 and 9 for the Lions.

Another sizeable win for the Eagles beckons.
