Rocket Science at the Launch Pad

The North v Forestville men's game was billed as the match of the round. Three games into the season and two with their full group, North could have been feeling the pressure of being favoured to win their first title in 24 years. Regular grand finalists Forestville could have been feeling pressure for another reason - having already lost to South, a loss here would make April, which includes matchups against Sturt, Norwood and West, that much tougher.

The teams matched each other early. Wayne Haydon exploded for 10 points in the first quarter and Dusty Rychart had 6. Former Brisbane Bullet Darren Breeding made his return to the Eagles with two minutes to go in the first, and swing man Scott Arnold also made his first appearance for 2007 in this game. At quarter time, North led 29-28.

The first 4 minutes of the second quarter were pivotal to the final result. Michael Zorich, who suited for an NBL game with the South Dragons this year, hit a 3 from the corner, then Ryan Kersten fed Dallas Quigley for a layup. The next play, Dusty Rychart pulled in a monster offensive rebound amongst four Eagles and completed the five foot put-back. When Zorich hit Rychart for a 3 on 2 layup, then made one of his own on transition, Andy Simons was looking at a 10 point deficit and was forced to call a time out.

Forestville rallied, and 5 points from Matt Sutton, including a layup on transition from a Brad Sullivan assist, and a 3 later in the quarter, kept them in touch. Kane Oakley hit a 3 on a shot clock buzzer, and Forestville managed to keep the lead to 10 at the half.

North started the third well, with Erik Burdon back cutting for a layup from a Nick Hambour assist, then assisting Rychart for another layup. Forestville then made a great run on the back of triples from Kane "Charles" Oakley and Brad "Ed" Sullivan, and all of a sudden, the lead was back to six. The Rockets then went on a 13-4 run to end the quarter, which included a big three from Jordan Kies and a put back by Ben Groves after being rejected by Oakley . At 3/4 time, North led 81-66.

When Leif Burdon hit a three to start the fourth quarter, Justin Schueller was fist pumping like Tiger Woods, but consecutive responses from Sullivan had the lead back to 11. That was as close as it got however, as North steadied to run out the game, eventually winning 103-80.

Dusty Rychart was the best Rocket by a slim margin with 25 points. Michael Zorich had 15 points and 6 assists, and Ryan Kersten had 11 points and 5 assists. For Forestville, Brad Sullivan had 21 and 6 assists, Kane Oakley had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Matt Sutton had 11 points and 6 assist.

Celebrity sightings at the game included Scott Ninnis, who entered the stadium as Justin Schueller's partner on an "admit two" pass, Brad Newley sporting a Jason Dix-like nude scalp, Jason Dix, and the more dedicated of the West Adelaide men's team. The Rocketeens (13 to 16 - get it?) fared better this week, with Matt Lycett passing his socks on to Rhys Elliott, and Cheif (sic) brought the house done with a late rebound, almost elevating in the process.
