Women's Game Previews - Round 13

(Includes Round 4 results when the teams last played)

Central District Lions v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, June 26th, 6.30pm at Starplex
North Adelaide 95 (M Stabile 13, E Pawlowski, S McKay 12, J Hill, S Zecevic 10) defeated
Central Districts 51 (A Land 13, D Roberts 8, E Oermann 7)

North must bounce back from their loss at home to the Southern Tigers last round. The Rockets’ loss has dropped them back to 6th place, 1 game behind Southern who now occupy the all important 5th spot. The Lions were gone at halftime the first time these two sides met when they had a poor second quarter scoring only 5 points while North piled on 28 points. North will look to restrict Amber Land who had a breakout game last round compiling 42 points, but she had little support offensively with Dayna Roberts the next best with 10 points.

South Adelaide Panthers v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, June 26th, 6.30pm at Marion
West Adelaide 75 (S Woosnam 20, T Holland 17, N Martin 15, L Coleman 12) defeated
South Adelaide 42 (C Johnson 12, U Richards 8, C Carpenter 7)

Three of South’s 4 wins have been at home but on recent form it is difficult to see them matching it with the Bearcats who welcomed back playing Coach Sam Woosnam last round (she finished with 19 points). The Bearcats have been hit by recent injuries and player absences but have the depth to cover the losses. The Panthers have struggled offensively to find multiple scorers who can post a winning score on any given night. To have any chance of claiming victory South will need to improve their 2nd half output in comparison to last week’s game when they could only manage 10 points in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Norwood Flames v Woodville WarriorS, Sat, June 26th, 6.30pm at Mars
Norwood 76 (J Walker-Roberts 22, Z Olekans, R Duke, K Shierlaw 9) defeated
Woodville 62 (B Gathercole, A White 15, C Christie 13, K Perkas 11)

Woodville have doubled their wins from season 2009 but it would be a big surprise if they added to that tally in this game. Although Norwood were weakened by the absence of star player Rebecca Duke and the early injury to Jess Foley in their match against the Sabres it was ultimately a low scoring second quarter that cost them victory. Woodville started slowly in their win against the Panthers but outscored them 37 – 20 after halftime to claim victory at home. This could be a close encounter if Foley and Duke are not available for the Flames.

Sturt Sabres v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, June 26th, 6.30pm at Pasadena
Sturt 79 (M Bowley 28, C Burgess 16, B Farley, K Hargreaves 11) defeated

Eastern 69 (T Madgen 35, L Wright 10, J Fricker 7)

Sabre Monique Bowley was the difference between the two sides when they last met, her 28 points against the Mavericks her highest score this season. She has continued with that good form to be one of Sturt’s leading scorers averaging 15.3 ppg and 9.7 rpg. Eastern guard Tess Madgen has been one of the stand out players of the competition but she will need more scoring support if Eastern are to record a victory and keep their dwindling finals hopes alive. Eastern will also need to counter Sturt guards Caroline Burgess and Bree Farley.

Forestville Eagles v Southern Tigers, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Wayville
Forestville 89 (J Bow 18, J Fergus 16, M Newley 15, J Mahony 14, J Trimboli 13) defeated
Southern 62 (R Jennings 24, R Cutri 11, M Cunningham, K Burkevics 9)

The Tigers face a true test when they clash with the Eagles who were in full flight against the Rockets last round. Forestville put the game beyond doubt when they crunched North in the first quarter 31 -12, a similar result to when they met Southern in round 4 winning that first quarter 33 – 7. Southern jumped Eastern in the first half of their game and will need a similar start this match. Southern have improved significantly winning their last 5 matches. How far they have improved will be revealed at the conclusion of this encounter.
