It has been nearly 12 months, but the Rockets women finally have a chance to make amends for their 2012 Grand Final defeat to the Flames in this Saturday’s sequel at Adelaide Arena.
The Rockets were the last team to beat the Flames, way back in the 2012 Second Semi Final. They are also the only club to come within single figures of the Flames, and the only side to not suffer a 20 point loss in either regular season match.
In addition, the Rockets are the last “away” team to lose a Grand Final, against Sturt in 2008.
The Flames reached this year’s Grand Final via the direct route, defeating Sturt 75-47 in the Second Semi Final. The Rockets have been on the verge of elimination in their last two matches, but after defeating Forestville in the First Semi Final, they paid the Sabres back for three previous defeats. Their 77-61 triumph in the Preliminary Final marked a 38 point turnaround from two weeks prior.
The Rockets found the going tough when they met the Flames in Round 4. They were down 13-28 at ¼ time and could not get back into the contest, losing by 19.
At the very least, three competitive quarters turned into four during the Round 13 rematch. With a number of key players from both sides missing, Amy Lewis (30 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists) just outdid Jamie-Lee Peris (22 points, 16 rebounds, 3 steals) as the Flames got home by six.
The Flames are much deeper offensively than the Rockets, with Lewis, Jess Foley, Rebecca Duke, Jessica Good, Cara Boothey, Elizabeth Keane, Megan Pritchard and Jordan Walker-Roberts all averaging between 17.5 ppg and 6.9 ppg.
The Rockets get the bulk of their offence through Jo Hill (18.7 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.6 apg) and Peris (13 ppg, 10 rpg, 2.6 apg), although Shannon McKay (10.4 ppg) and Kirsty Williams (8.3 ppg) can hit fire in a hurry if given the opportunity. Jess Smart (6.7 ppg) and Genna Anderson (6.4 ppg) have both put up better numbers in past years, so could be x-factors for this game.
Poor shooting in previous meetings did not stop the Rockets turning the tables against Sturt – they outscored the Sabres 44-8 over the second and third quarters after shooting no better than 33 per cent in their previous three meetings. They will need to repeat their resilience and improvement against the league’s best team if they are to score enough points to offer a challenge.
