Women's Reviews - Round 8

Central District Lions v Sturt Sabres, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Starplex
It what would have been a surprise for most, Centrals were never headed during the first quarter and at one stage led Sturt 11 – 6 after a basket to the Lions' Amber Land who finished the night with a double double of 23 points and 14 rebounds. In the second quarter the locals matched it with their more fancied opponents until Sturt's Caroline Burgess broke out for a run of 7 points, the last basket a 3 pointer, to push the Sabres out to a 5 point margin (32 – 29). At the half time interval the visitors were only ahead by 3 points (34 – 31), after the Lions had lead for the majority of the first half. In the third quarter Centrals came undone when they were outscored 23 – 11. That quarter was enough for Sturt to set up victory. Sturt's Monique Bowley, who finished with 23 points, did a lot of the damage along with Caroline Burgess (13) and Bree Farley (16). That trio finished the top scorers for their team with Burgess adding 10 rebounds to her score. For the Lions, Fiona Perso finished with 7 points and 14 rebounds and Dayna Roberts had 17 points in a competitive performance from the Lions.

Eastern Mavericks v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Adelaide Hills
Eastern were strengthened by the return of promising juniors Alex Wilson and Cody Lange who combined for 30 points between them. At half time the scores were locked together (39 – 39). Eastern had stayed with the Flames but were having trouble handling the height of Rachael Herrick who was being fed the ball inside for easy baskets. It was also a big challenge for the Mavericks to restrict the impact that class players Jess Foley and Rebecca Duke were having on the contest. Foley went on to be Norwood's high scorer with 33 points including 11/12 free throws. In the opening minutes of the last quarter, Tess Madgen scored, her team regaining the lead 66 – 64. Jess Foley then scored the next basket and a free throw to wrest lead back to the Flames. They were never headed from that point, Foley finishing with 13 points for the final quarter to be the match winner.

Southern Tigers v Woodville Warriors, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Morphett Vale
The Tigers made a statement in the first quarter of their contest against the Warriors when they set up a commanding lead of 16 points by the end of the period, 25 – 9.  Coming off a loss the previous round against the Flames, the Tigers outfit was keen to win at home. After a pair of free throws to Ashleigh Spencer (Tigers) in the second quarter the locals had doubled the visitors' score, 40 -20. As time in the third quarter ran down, the Warriors closed the margin and with game high scorer Jodie Barratt (15 points), Katherine Perkas and Brittany Winter all finding baskets, they trimmed back the difference to just 9 points. Winter scored the first basket of the last quarter (53 – 46) but from that point on Southern held the Warriors at bay, eventually winning 73 – 62.

North Adelaide Rockets v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, May 8th, 8.15pm at Hillcrest
The Bearcats showed that they were able to cover the loss of playing coach Sam Woosnam when they powered away from the Rockets in the last quarter adding 26 points whilst holding the home side to just 6 points. That score was almost a season low but against the Eagles in Round 3 they posted just 5 points in the second quarter (the Rockets also lost that match). In this match, North Adelaide were up by 8 points at ¾ time (53 – 45) but could not halt the run of Bearcat baskets in the last quarter. Nikita-Lee Martin (23 points and 10 rebounds), Kerrin Webber (16 points and 14 rebounds), Sky Langenbrinck (12 points) and Trudy Holland (10 points) were the main scorers for the Bearcats. In a losing team Jo Hill (13 points and 11 rebounds), Kirsty Williams (12 points) and Bec Lock were the most productive. The loss leaves North holding on to 5th place, just one game clear of South Adelaide and Eastern.

Forestville Eagles v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Wayville
