Messenger Round 15 Review

CENTRAL Districts won its first women’s basketball match since round 13, 2006 on Saturday night.

The Lions did it in dramatic fashion too. Trailing by five with less than two minutes left, the Lions sunk three three-pointers, including Tahnee Mansfield’s game-winner with 23 seconds left, to storm home against the Eastern Mavericks 82-78.

Central’s previous win was a 70-64 victory against South in the 2006 season where they went 2-20.

The following year, the Lions did not enter a women’s team in the Central ABL competition, and since returning to the league in 2008, had not won a game.

Coach Winston Folland said the final two minutes and the ensuing celebrations were "a blur’".

"It was like the biggest party of all time," Folland said.

"It was fantastic, absolutely fantastic.’"

The four-point win marked a 49-point turnaround from the last time the Lions met the Mavs, which was an 88-43 win to the Mavs in round 6.
