ANZAC Clash

The Wayville Sports Centre plays host to Central ABL action on Saturday between Forestville and Central Districts, in a special ANZAC day double header.

While most teams enjoy a three week hiatus, Forestville's men will look to maintain their unbeaten record, and set themselves up for a top-of-the-table clash with Sturt on May 9. The Eagles managed their off-season losses well, and while they have five veterans averaging double figures, 19 year old James Boonstoppel has shown evidence that he may have a future a this level, with 5.3 points in 13 minutes per game.

The Lions' 1 and 3 record may not tell the full story of their start to the season, as they fact their third top-three opponent in as many games. In their last game, Centrals led West Adelaide by 11 and quarter time before being overrun by the Bearcats in the next three quarters. Another 19 year old, Jacob Templeton has led the way, averaging 17.8 points per game.

While it might be hard to gauge, Centrals' women have shown some steady improvement over the last 18 months. The Lions suffered a heavy loss to West last game and things won't get much easier against Forestville, but the club can take solace in the slowly reducing margins compared to previous years, as well as the good form of Charlotte Taylor, a Central ABL "veteran" at 17.

The presence of former national league players Dee Ranford and Jess Mahony make the Eagles' women a perennial finals contender, but Forestville, much like North Adelaide, is now benefiting from the transition of players from junior to senior ranks. Mia Newley leads scoring and rebounding categories and is one of the 6 of Forestville's top 9 players aged 21 or under.

In addition to the on-court battles, the significance of the day will be recognised by the playing of the last post, a minute's silence, and the reading of an ode. The night will also have a family atmosphere with a BBQ, damper and face painting.
