Viewing Extravaganza

With a combination of school holidays and games spread across two weekends, round 5 of the Central ABL offers unprecedented opportunities for fans to witness SA's best basketball talent on display.

On Friday night, the pick of the double headers is at Port Adelaide, between West Adelaide and North Adelaide. The men's game features new Bearcat Ryan Kersten's first stoush with his previous club, Kersten currently the league's second top scorer with 25.8 points per game. The women's game features 2007 premiers and 2009 favourites West Adelaide pitted against a Rocket team that has been scorching in three of its four games, racking up point scores of 95, 92 and 88.

Also on Friday night, Norwood takes on Southern at Mars. Norwood's men would be more than satisfied with its form since dropping its round 1 game to Forestville, but would still be counting the days until the league's premier point guard Todd Matthews returns from injury. Southern has had two weeks to recover from a 1st quarter blitz from Sturt and would be hoping to avoid a recurrence of the 8 game slide it suffered last year after its second loss. In the absence of Jess Foley and Tracy Braithwaite, the Tigers and Flames are both fielding more youth-oriented sides and their matchup should prove to be fast-paced and exciting.

Saturday's men's games will provoke great interest from the casual Central ABL observer, more for the mystery of who will play than who won't. 36er Luke Schenscher is eligible to play for Eastern against South and Marcus Ng, runner-up in the 2007 Woollacott medal count, is a possibility to play for Sturt against Woodville. Whether both, either or neither suit remains to be seen.

Woodville's women will face a weaker Sturt team than in previous years, though the loss of guard Ursula Richards to a knee injury will hurt the Warriors. Despite only having a 2-2 record, the Panther women are white hot, having defeated 2008 premiers Sturt and 2009 contender Norwood, with Cassandra Carpenter and Kerrin Truslove leading the way in points and rebounds.

On ANZAC day, Forestville and Central Districts will do battle at Wayville, in the only game for the weekend. In recognizing the significance of this special day, the night will feature a number of events to honour war veterans, including the playing of the last post, a minute's silence and an ode reading.

On the court, Forestville's men would hope to maintain its undefeated record, though despite their respective ladder positions, many would argue that Forestville is a slightly weaker team than last year and Centrals a slightly stronger team. Forestville's women have had a roller coaster start to the season, alternating double figure wins and losses each round, and while they'd still be strong favourites against the Lions, Centrals have shown some early progress from last season and are receiving good points production from new team members Dayna Roberts and Tahnee Mansfield.
