Ref's Word - It's 400 Games for Wayne

On Saturday July 26 Wayne Maidment will officiate his 400th ABA game when the Southern Tigers Women take on the Norwood Flames, 6:30pm at Morphett Vale.

Wayne commenced officiating in the ABA on September 5, 1987 when he called the Woodville Warriors v Adelaide Buffalos game with Ean Turner (now deceased).

Wayne’s 400 games (322 Men’s and soon to be 78 Women’s) includes more than 10 Grand Finals in the Central ABL and two Grand Finals in the SEABL in 1995 & 1997.

In addition to Wayne’s ABA career, he officiated in the NBL and WNBL from 1992-1999.

Wayne has also been the recipient of the Phil Yuill Memorial Trophy as Referee of the Year in the Central ABL.

In 1989 Wayne was the State Dux of NBL/ABF Referee Scholarship Programme and was awarded Life Membership of the Basketball Association of South Australia (now Basketball SA) in 1996.

While acknowledging Wayne’s achievement we should also recognize the support of Debbie, his wife of 23 years, who, before they started their family, was his best critic.

Basketball SA congratulates Wayne on this tremendous achievement and wishes him all the very best in his future refereeing endeavors.
