Flames Slay Warriors

Ben McKay

The Norwood Flames have cruised past the Woodville Warriors in a 30-point win at MARS on Saturday
night.

Going into the game, the Flames (1st) were on a six-game winning streak, and the Warriors (5th) boasted a 5-1 record when they were fresh, and had won their last two games. Woodville coach Michael Cobbing threw the first curveball of the night, starting Cam Wilson on the bench and opting for a versatile defensive team. Without the services of rebounder Ryan Willis, and the team’s second-leading scorer Gary Birmingham, the Warriors would need everything on their side to steal the win.

In a tight opening quarter, scoring was hard to come by, but the Flames closed with a nine-point lead. The Warriors put a lot of pressure on the ring through Ben McKay and Gavin Kargans, and get to the foul line with regularity despite the significant size disadvantage. If not for some slick outside shooting by Norwood, the scoreline could have read differently. The second quarter went much the same way as the first, the Flames up by 26 at the half on the back of some impressive transition offense, sparked by the defensive play of Sam Gratham, who, despite foul trouble, enhanced his reputation as a defensive stopper with seven blocks for the game.

The Warriors capitalised on a change in defense at the half by the Flames, and drew to within 16 in the third. Good outside shooting by Cam Wilson and interior passing from Paul Rees kept the visitor’s hopes alive, but relentless work inside by Dan Thompson, and steady scoring by Andrew Webber and Todd Matthews steadied the ship, and the game played out event-free for the 30-point win.
