Flames Wary of (un)Weary Warriors

Paul Rees

The Woodville Warriors will be full of confidence as they venture into MARS this weekend to take on the league-leading Norwood Flames. Riding high on a two-game winning streak and a game clear in the top five, the Warriors will be looking to exact some revenge for a 44-point pounding at the hands of the Flames last time they met.

Warriors skipper Cameron Wilson looms as the biggest threat for Norwood. His dogged playmaking creates many opportunities for his team mates, while 36ER veteran Paul Rees coordinates the troops at the defensive end. A cause for concern will be the depth in scoring the Warriors seem to have, their last win (against Centrals) yielding six double-figure scorers, and the outside shooting of the Warriors is as
deadly as any in the league.

Last time they played, it was the second game of the weekend, the Warriors had had a tough win against Sturt the night before and had little left in the tank. They were also minus Paul Rees and Adam Miller, leaving a sizeable hole in the middle the Flames were able to exploit. After a gallant first term, the Warriors were running on empty and the Flames blew the game out with a 46-point second term.

Don’t expect the same thing to happen Saturday night at MARS, as a fresher, full Woodville roster will have noted the Flames’ scrappy return against West Adelaide last week, and will be looking forward to serving the Flames all they can handle.

The Flames have depth to spare, and will look to use this to their advantage as the game wears on. The Flames’ second five includes David Cooper, Andrew Webber and Sam Grantham, with plenty of emerging juniors ready to wreak havoc.

This weekend also sees the possible return for the Flames of Max Papendieck, arriving Thursday from the US were he was an integral member of his College team’s Conference Championship.
