Tigers chase down Warriors Women to claim top spot
SOUTHERN Tigers cashed in on Eastern Mavericks’ first loss of the season to rise to the top of the ladder after four rounds.
The Tigers recorded another impressive win as they downed Woodville 83-67 at Morphett Vale in an Anzac Day clash.
Fresh off big wins against Central Districts and South Adelaide, Southern reeled in a six-point half-time deficit to extend its winning streak to three games.
The Tigers dug deep to outscore the Warriors 47-25 in the final 20 minutes.
Southern had a number of contributors with five players – including four starters – reaching double-figures.
Tara Dodman produced the best return, finishing with 19 points and five rebounds.
Mollie McKendrick (15 points, nine rebounds), Alexandra Green (14 points, six rebounds and seven assists), Denelle Fawcett (11 points, five rebounds) and Raynisha Washington (10 points) chipped in with strong performances.
Woodville started positively chasing a third win of the season and led by nine during the first half before being overpowered.
Jennifer Monroe was a standout for the Warriors, chalking up 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Ashley Claussen added 19 points to go with six boards.
Woodville showed it could match the Tigers but not for long enough as the tale of its inconsistent season, which has seen it go win-loss-win-loss, continued.
The Warriors can bounce back against Norwood this weekend while Southern will aim to consolidate top spot against West Adelaide.
