Pioneers to visit Adelaide

South Australia's only SEABL team, the Scott's of Mount Gambier Pioneers, will travel to Adelaide this weekend to get some pre-season hit outs against two of last year's Central ABL finalists.

The Pioneers play Forestville on Saturday night at 7:30pm, and Norwood on Sunday at 2pm, both at Wayville. Forestville finished 3rd in the 2008 Central ABL, while Norwood were runners-up to North Adelaide.

Late last year, the Pioneers appointed Ray de Wit as head coach for the next 2 seasons. Local fans may remember De Wit as a member of Central Districts' and Woodville's teams of the 80s, but he also played over 100 games with Pioneers from 1990 onwards.

De Wit enters the 2008 season with a mixture of new and old faces. Former Pioneer great Kurt Russell returns to the team, after a few years in Townsville, and the club has retained the services of Dallas Jeffree, Jason Sedlock, Craig Stratford and Chris Mason.

New import Tristan Parham arrived in Australia on Thursday and joined the team for a two game series against the Adelaide 36ers last weekend. Parham suffered from illness upon his arrival, but has recovered and will be keen to demonstrate his value this weekend.

The SEABL is considered to provide the highest standard of basketball in Australia outside the NBL. Mount Gambier have a strong history in this league, making the SEABL grand final in 1997 and winning the ABA National Finals in 2003. Although the team still has players to bring into its lineup, this weekend's games will provide a rare opportunity for fans to see SA's SEABL team in action.
