Rnd 20: Sabres Men dominant over Centrals

By Jake Stoubos
Sturt Sabres 113 | Central Districts Lions 61

Sturt Sabres put on a governing display over the Central Districts Lions, polishing them off by an incredible 52 points at Pasadena Stadium last Saturday night.

The home town side started of the match in incredible fashion. Not only did they score the first basket, but they were relentless with navigating the court. A couple of three pointers and some nice ball movement saw them capture an early lead. Central Districts managed to sink some nice consecutive baskets in their own right, allowing them to just hang in the contest 29-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Despite the Lions’ being first to score in the second, Sturt completely dominated this quarter.  They were so forceful with how they controlled the court and made offensive plays, scoring 11 consecutive points at one stage.  Isaac White and Jack Turnbull together scored back-to-back three pointers at one point elevating their sides’ lead. Centrals just couldn’t keep up with what Sturt was putting on display in this period, constantly missing shots and giving away too many fouls and free-throws. Sturt lead by 35 points at half time.

For a brief moment in the second half, the game evened out, treating the crowd to some back and forth competitive action. However that didn’t last all that long as Sturt regained control of the match shortly thereafter. To the Lions’ credit though, they were still scoring decent numbers in the second half. However Sturt were just on another level as their offensive pressure and ruthlessness was just too immense for the visiting side to match. The Sabres were too good for Centrals to handle on the night, falling in the final period 113-61.

Jacob Rigoni had a heavy contribution in the match with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for his winning side.

Luke Frost was the top scorer for his Lions with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

With this win, Sturt tie with Forestville for third place with 48 points and will look to secure their position in the last round of the season next week against the Eagles.

Round 21: Saturday, 13 August at 8.15pm
