Rnd 16: Flames Women hold off strong Mavericks

By Mark Halliday

Norwood Flames 64 | Eastern Mavericks 60

The Norwood Flames halted a late game run from the visiting Eastern Mavericks to escape with a narrow 64-60 win at Mars on Saturday night.

After a slow start by both teams saw a low scoring first quarter, the Flames turned on the pressure as it they outscored the Mavericks 23-13 in the second, including a 16-4 run to close the first half.

Neither team could establish a rhythm as the Flames took an early lead but the Mavericks quickly closed the gap before the Norwood run. Both coaches were close to tearing their hair out from the handful of head-scratching calls made by the referees. Mavericks coach Nathon Jones received a technical foul late in the second for voicing his frustration at the officials, while Flames coach Jess Foley was equally perplexed with a number of decisions.

Chelsea Brook (20 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Jess Good (9 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks) had 11 and 8 points respectively while Jess Mahony (8 points, 9 assists, 6 steals) was able to draw defenders towards her on the driver only to kick it out for an open shot. Norwood led 35-24 at the half as the Mavericks couldn't answer the run that could've put them out of the game.

The Mavericks slowly reduced the lead as Brooke Basham led her team in the second half. Basham (25 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assist, 2 blocks) hit shot after shot as the lead was brought down to 5 midway through the final quarter.

The Flames pushed the lead back out to 12 as Brook, Mahony and Kristen Macaskill (10 points, 4 rebounds) all found the net but Norwood would not hit another field goal for the remainder of the match.

Basham had scored 7 straight points in less than a minute and Tamara Weiss' (8 points, 5 rebounds) shot had the Mavericks down by only 3 with 21 seconds left to play.

Unfortunately for the Mavericks the clock was not their friend as they were forced to foul. Good only made one of her free throws with 3 seconds remaining but it was enough for Norwood to seal the win.
