Rnd 16: Bearcats Women dominated Eagles

By Connor Rice

West Adelaide Bearcats 88 |Forestville Eagles 62

Two of the league’s more even squads, faced up in Port Adelaide on Saturday night for what started out a very competitive game. Both of these teams are quite alike, typically smaller than other squads but they play hard and get up and down the floor.

The 1st quarter saw the Bearcats really set the tone for the game, as they were playing some stifling front court defense and getting good inside looks. The pressure being utilised caused a lot of loose ball turnovers from the Eagles’ guards and this allowed the Bearcats to get out on the break and score with minimal effort. The 1st quarter ended on the bearcats having a really strong margin and looking to close out the game easily.

In the 2nd quarter the Eagles managed to get the game to under 10. Olivia Thompson was massive for the Eagles as she was really their one viable offensive option throughout the game. Whether inside or from the mid-range, Thompson proved a headache for Bearcats defense, as she poured in 20 points. It was obvious that Thompson was one of the team’s only shot creators and the Eagles will really rely on her offense in the coming weeks. Samantha Defrancesco also helped out with 18 strong points. Unfortunately for the Eagles girls outside of that duo, no one else scored more than 7 and this lack of production really let them down going into the second half.

In the 3rd quarter, the onslaught really started up again. Going back to their 1st quarter trap defense, the bearcats again managed to get too many strong looks inside as the Eagles couldn’t recover defensively. The Eagles guard set really struggled to maintain the Bearcats dribble penetration and against a team like West Adelaide this was deadly.

Throughout the 3rd and 4th the Bearcats really piled it on as the score board ran up to an insurmountable deficit. Unlike the Eagles, the Bearcats had a much more even box score. Special mention to Ashlea Vordermaier who had a massive 25 points, as well as Zecevic and Campbell both finishing with a handy 12. Ultimately it was a combination of great Bearcats defense, an off shooting night for the Eagles and some big individual games that helped the Bearcats become victorious.
