Rnd 15: Tigers Women too strong for the struggling Panthers

By Connor Rice

Southern Tigers 77 | South Adelaide Panthers 53

Currently sitting in the second seed, the resurgence of the Tigers program this season has been amazing. Coming off a strong win against the tough Eagles away, the squad was full of confidence and this showed as they came out really strong.

The big question this week was how the Tigers women would respond offensively missing their key scorer and former Panther, Mollie McKendrick. Averaging 22ppg on the season, it’s not a question that McKendrick is the rock for the Tigers’ elite offense. Thankfully for those down at Morphett Vale, they got some amazing production from the rest of the core and this saw them win convincingly.

Tara Robinson and Ta’Rea Cunnigan came up massive for the Tigers on Saturday, as they both poured in 23 and 24 points respectively. The pairing was dominant inside, getting into the lane and operating in close to get solid high percentage looks. Their offense really seemed to set the tone for the game and dominate how the Tigers wanted to get it done. Jemma Thacker also stood up for 16 points to help the team over the line. The overall depth of production proved way too good for a struggling Panthers defense who unfortunately have been overmatched in many games this season.

The Tigers’ defense was stifling. Getting out to shooters on the perimeter and Robinson rolling over to help inside has been all season a major key to the Tigers continued success. As the second seed, it’s customary for the leagues’ elite to be strong on both ends of the floor but for squads such as the Tigers and Flames, this is really potent.

As they say, the best offense is a good defense and this will remain a focal point for the Tigers coaching staff as we inch closer to the finals. Ultimately the outstanding Cunnigan and Robinson duo and the overall team defense, proved way too much for the Panthers women as the game blew out early.

Round 16: Saturday, 9 July 6:30pm
