Rnd 12: Flames victorious in thriller against Panthers

By Jake Stoubos

Norwood Flames 79 | South Adelaide 70

Norwood has moved to second place after defeating South Adelaide 79-70 in an all-out battle on Saturday night at Marion.

The Flames started exceptionally well. Jacob Holmes was the first to get his name on the scoring sheet thanks to an impressive three pointer within the first 21 seconds. South Adelaide quickly retaliated shortly thereafter. The game remained relatively back and forth until the Flames took control later on with some solid ball movement and precision shooting.

Norwood continued their dominance early on in the second quarter until South Adelaide fired back with an imposing run of their own. The level of physicality was elevated in this period, as several fouls were being distributed alongside with a couple of high contact violations. Subsequently, this resulted in a slower pace which South was able to take advantage of. With their determination and ability to capitalise on free-throws when needed, the Panthers were able to tighten the score at 41-42 leading into halftime.

The excitement and atmosphere elevated to a new level in the second half. With only a point the difference, both teams were looking to make their mark on the game and take control.

Norwood gave away too many free-throws early on, letting South jump in front for the first time in the match. Adrien Coleman had a fantastic play half way through the quarter, with a steal from the defensive end and South’s pressure following this was phenomenal, catching Norwood off guard a little.

Following a Norwood timeout at the seven minute mark, the Flames were able to score 12 consecutive points, allowing for an exciting comeback and thus putting an end to the Panthers’ momentum.

The fourth quarter was very tight. The scoring was consistent by both sides, until Matthew Lycett had a good interception which allowed for his Flames to break the tie. This set up for a Norwood flurry in the final few minutes which saw them move in front quite significantly and get the win.

In what was a tight and competitive match, South Adelaide will no doubt be disappointed with their loss, while Norwood will be thankful they were able to capitalise when needed.

Jacob Holmes was best on ground for the night with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Adrien Coleman was great for his Panthers with 20 points and 4 assists.
