Rnd 4: North Adelaide Women defeat Southern Tigers

By Kieren Vartuli

North Adelaide 87 | Southern Tigers 73

North Adelaide (2-1) took on the Southern Tigers (2-1) in a very physical clash for the last of the women’s Blockbuster Round games on Saturday night.

The Rockets and the Tigers both showed intensity throughout the first term by hustling hard for loose balls. North Adelaide found themselves down by a couple points early on but this was quickly rectified by forcing turnovers and converting on the other end of the floor.

Both teams threw some risky cross-court passes, which sometimes became costly for the Tigers but luckily it did not leave them out of the game. The two sides exchanged buckets for the lead until North Adelaide ran away with it leaving them up 7 points (24-17) at the end of the first.

The Tigers and the Rockets came out of the break looking a little sloppy with their passes causing turnovers but they were both working very well on the glass by tearing down offensive boards. The Tigers were playing some real physical defence which allowed them to stay in the game as they were trading buckets back and forth. Although North Adelaide was a force to be reckoned with in the paint as they were forcing the outside shot which left them with a 7 point buffer at the half.

North Adelaide applied pressure in the third by trapping the Tigers when they were looking for a pass. The Tigers were able to remain close through successful free throws on multiple occasions and Mollie McKendrick had a monster game with 33 points, 11 rebounds for the night. Ta’Rea Cunnigan also played well with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists. The Rockets were unstoppable however and were able to increase the lead to 14 points at three quarter time. Opal Mader played well for the Rockets finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds, as did Shannon McKay who took had 19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists.

The Tigers showed too much inconsistency in the final term to warrant a comeback for the win and North were just too strong on the defensive end, forcing costly turnovers for the Tigers. North Adelaide’s excellent ball movement allowed them to open up team mates to execute the end of the play and the final siren saw the Rockets achieve their third win for the season by 14 points.

The loss for the Tigers has left them in sixth place, while the Rockets are sitting at third place, tied with four other sides on 3-1.
