Rnd 3: Woodville Men overcome Lions for first win

Woodville Warriors 88 | Central Districts Lions 74

In the first game after the Easter break, the Woodville Warriors travelled to Starplex to hunt down their first win against the Centrals Lions on Saturday.

The match was very competitive right from the opening tip, with both teams trading bucket for bucket. The Lions were playing very physical down in the paint, as it was common to see the Warriors at the line working for points. Defence was strong on both sides of the hardwood and the defence in transition caused many troubles trying to score on the break. In a highlight play to close out the first quarter, Woodville’s Darren Ng showed some flashy handles and nailed a jumper to bring it within 1, leaving the score at 19-18.

Woodville opened up the second term strongly by hitting back-to-back baskets including a big 3 to take the lead early. There was an excellent amount of work being shown by both sides on the glass as they were hustling to rip down both offensive and defensive rebounds. This was an excellent show to watch.

Central’s David Earl finished off an offensive play with a nice dunk after ripping down an offensive board to keep morale high. Although, the very next play Warriors import and game top scorer, Nelson Kirksey (28 points) answered back with a dunk of his own. Woodville were able to finish the half with a 10-point lead after Ng struck again leaving the score at 37-47.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Lions were once again very physical on the defensive end of the floor contesting shots at all costs. The Lions showed some good signs throughout the third term including a few flashy plays from Nathan Marsing. Marsing sunk a difficult step back 3 ball to bring the lead back down to 16 points. Despite these signs of light from the home side, Woodville’s transition game was too strong and held a 12-point lead heading into the final break.

Coming into the fourth it appeared that the Lions were going to bring it down to the wire but Woodville performed a few nice plays giving them some separation and handing them their first victory of their 2016 campaign.
