Superman Returns

Sporting a Superman tattoo on his shoulder, Sturt's Jordan Dodman made a welcome return to action, but it was lanky lefty Marcus Ng who exploded for an incredible 29 point first half against Woodville at the Dome.

Ng started the game in passing mode with a lob to Dodman for a layup on transition. Gary Birmingham responded with a 15 foot jump shot, then made a no-look pass to Peter Steele to give Woodville an early lead. Mark Paget made a jump hook, but Adam Miller scored a tournaround jump shot and converted a baseline play to keep things close. After missing a couple of early shots, Marcus Ng hit two threes in succession, then Mitch Simmons hit one from the corner. Rohan Cropley made a strong finish, and Ben McKay finished a step through move with a three point play. Ng finished the quarter with a layup through traffic to give Sturt a 5 point lead.

Gary Birmingham picked up his third foul when Andrew Braham drew a charge 4 minutes into the second quarter, and this triggered 23-11 run to end the quarter, much of which came from Ng. He started with an athletic tip in, then continued with an array of layups, jump shots and three pointers. With Birmingham on the bench and Cam Wilson overseas, Sturt were on a roll, and went into the changerooms up 13.

Birmingham picked up his fifth foul a minute into the 3rd quarter, and had to sit again. Ben McKay showed some fight in the third, in an entertaining battle with his 1999 SA Metro Under 16 teammate Nathan Vaughan, who also made the most of his extra minutes. Woodville were still struggling to contain Sturt's scoring, and when Todd Sutton repeated his debut effort last week by hitting a three, the Sturt bench was on its feet. Andrew Braham finished the quarter with a long range 2 and the lead was 23.

Despite tiptoeing around referees this week, Luke Mapunda showed some fight in the last quarter, as did Ben McKay, but the damage was done. Ng came on for a quick three point play, then returned to the bench, as both teams rotated their players. Sutton hit another 3 and a mid-range 2, and by the end of the game, the lead had blown out to 31.

Ng was obviously the best for Sturt - his 36 point more significant given that he did most of it in the first half. Dodman had 15 points and 7 boards, and drew extra defenders at times, though wasn't required to play a huge offensive role. For Woodville, McKay was solid in the second half, and his 22 points led his team. Adam Miller had 16 points, while Mapunda had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tiger Woods fist pump-of-the-week award goes to Todd Sutton. Sutton scored 10 points in 9 minutes court time, and accentuated 3 of his 4 baskets with an FP. Kudos also to presidential progeny Mitch Simmons and Josh "Killer" Calligeros. In their debut seasons, they share the "Why don't you play me for 48 minutes?" award. Extrapolation techniques on this game alone indicate that Killer would have scored 64 points, and Simmons would have fouled out twice, had the becollared Flynn played them for the whole game.
