Visiting Exports

The names Ahmatt and Clausen would be familiar to most South Australian basketball aficionados, and fans of the Central ABL will have a unique opportunity to see an Ahmatt and a Clausen in action weekend.

Michael Ahmatt was one of the most successful South Australians ever to play the game. He was a star for the Australian team that finished 9th at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, and was also selected for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Dan Clausen had an impressive NBL career, and as an import with the Adelaide 36ers in 1984, was selected in the NBL All Star Five.

Clearly, if their children were to ever pick up a basketball, they would have big shoes to fill.

Shane Ahmatt, had a promising junior career with South, and worked his way into the Adelaide 36ers lineup, before moving to Denver in the mid 90s to play at Metro State College under former 36ers coach Mike Dunlap. Shane remained in the US after finishing with Metro State, but arrived in Adelaide a couple of weeks ago, and will suit up for South Adelaide this weekend.

Chris Clausen grew up in Gawler, and played juniors with Centrals since Under 16s. He was a member of the Academy squad last year and played part of the 2006 season in the Central ABL, before heading to Kansas to play for Fort Scott Junior College. He also returned to Adelaide a couple of weeks ago, and will reacquaint himself with his Lions teammates at Starplex this weekend.

In other news, AIS scholarship holder Nikki Martin will suit for Forestville against Sturt at the reopening of Pasadena on Saturday night. Martin is one of six South Australians recently selected in an Australian Under 19 Women's squad of 16, the others being Abby Bishop, Cayla Francis, Emma Langford, Lauren Mansfield and Mia Newley.

Make the most of a rare opportunity to see some South Australian exports in action this weekend.
