Sabres Women over Mavericks at the Mount

In tonight's women's game between Eastern and Sturt, the level of expectation was clear very early with Mavs rookie coach Brenton Johnston demanding hustle from the outset. On the floor, it was all Sturt early once Hannah Bowley got them started, an Eastern time out 2 and a half minutes in ending a 7 - 0 start by the Sabres. The Mavs got on the board through Jane Symons soon after, but Symons' lay up and bonus foul shot as well as a bucket from point guard Amanda Williams was all the Mavs could manage for the quarter. The Sabres meanwhile put on a blistering performance (including the last 11 points of the quarter) on their way to a 24 - 5 lead.

Sturt came out of the blocks hard once again with the first 5 points of the second quarter before the Mavs started to show signs of life. Despite seven missed lay ups, the Mavs upped their 11% FG rate from the first in an effort to at least equal the Sabres scoring rate. Caroline Nixon (7/9 from the field) posted all of her quiet 15 points before the main break popping up whenever the Mavs started to build a run, with a sweet finish or big 3, while the Bowley girls continued to apply the pressure at the other end of the court. The Mavs offence did show brief moments of life with Williams leading the way with 10 first half points, but they were still were outscored 29 - 20 in the quarter and went to the rooms down 25 - 53.

The second half saw a lift in tempo but also in errors as both teams gave their benches a run and a free flowing half saw the Sabres quickly walk away with a 84 - 59 win, the Mavs managing to win the final quarter 18 - 15 against the Sabre bench. Caroline Nixon missed just three shots on her way to a team high 15 points (plus 6 rebounds), Hannah Bowley posted figures of 12 points and 10 boards and Captain Monique Bowley managed 9 and 9, all playing less then 23 minutes each.
