Cannon Fires in Thriller at the Cage

Leah Cannon

Southern women escaped with a 1 point victory over North in a thriller at Morphett Vale, but only after Erin Lorenzini's buzzer-beating layup rimmed out.

The Tigers found themselves down 10 points early in the game, after a 11-2 Rocket run which included a Lauren Mansfield triple and two layups on transition from Tania Dhu no-look passes. The North guards were doing an excellent job of doubling Tracey Beatty and Southern were unable to get the ball to open shooters to counter. Jamie-Lee Peris had two offensive boards in her first 30 seconds on court to further extend the lead, but a Leah Cannon three pulled the margin back to 10 at quarter time.

Cannon continue her contribution in the second quarter, with a stutter move into a jump shot followed by another mid-range shot on transition, and in no time Southern had halved the lead. A purple patch from Kate Hilton in which she hit 3 jump shots and drew a charge made for a 36-32 deficit at half time.

Beatty came alive in the second half, scoring 16 of her 20 points after half time. With 13 assists between them, Leah Cannon and Tamara Walker fed Beatty for successive layups, and Southern gradually pulled away to a 5 point lead, but North regained it at 3/4 time on a Tania Dhu three pointer.

Like any good shooter, Walker, who had been missing early, kept shooting. Her two threes to start the 4th gave Southern some breathing space, but a Lizzie Wright layup on transition pegged the lead back to 2 with 4 minutes to go. Wright followed up with a 20 foot jump shot, a steal and two foul shots, and an Erin Lorenzini jump shot gave North a 1 point lead with 30 seconds remaining. Leah Cannon was fouled with 7.8 seconds remaining, and iced her only two foul shots of the game to give Southern the final winning margin, 76-75.

For Southern, Cannon had 15 points to go with her 8 assists and led her team well all night. In the second half, Siegfried and Roy couldn't have tamed Beatty, who finished with 20 points and 13 boards. Olivia Warnes had 14 points, and Rebekah Redden had 9 points and 10 rebounds.

For North, Jenah Piwanski top scored with 16 points, and Lizzie Wright had 13. Jamie- Lee Perris had a double double, and Erin Lorenzini had 10 points.

Both teams have limited time to prepare for undefeated opponents on Sunday, the Tigers facing Sturt at Morphett Vale, and the Rockets at home to Eastern.
