Men's Previews - Rounds 2 and 3

Woodville Warriors v Eastern Mavericks, Saturday March 24, 8:15pm at DH Dome

Both Jason Bray and Richard Hill suffered losses away from home in week 1, Woodville to Southern and Eastern to Forestville. Looking for his first ABA win, Bray will hope for a similar output from Cam Wilson, who had 23 points against the Tigers, and Luke Mapunda, who had 19, but will be looking for more contributors. The Mavs are in a similar situation, getting good productivity from Jye Watson and Brad Bungey, but looking for others to chip in. With neither team boasting an overly large front court, this should be a high paced game.

Southern Tigers v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat. March 24, 8:15pm at Morphett Vale

The Tigers started their run of four games at The Cage with a high scoring win against the Warriors, veteran Ben Hodges in fine form. Former Rocket Ryan Franceschinis, who had 19 of his own, will be keen to impress, and expect a good effort from the hard-working Matt Clarke against the talented North backcourt. The Rockets would be smarting from their first-up loss against the Bearcats, but would be elated to bring former North junior Ryan Kersten into the lineup as well as marquee player Dusty Rychart. Both could be jetlagged, arriving in Adelaide just two days earlier, and how well coach Justin Schueller can integrate them into the rotation will have a big effect on their impact.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Sturt Sabres, Saturday March 24, 8:15pm at Port Adelaide

West showed the benefit of some tough pre-season competition both at the Blitz and in Mt. Gambier, surprising league favourites North in round 1. Player of the week Anthony Spadavecchia made the most of his starting position, and Townsville recruit Kris Davis added 22 points at 63% accuracy. The return of former 36er Blake Truslove will be exciting, as will his first-up match up against current 36er Jordan Dodman, who should see greater opportunities with Sturt's smaller lineup this year. SA Metro Under 16 Men's coach Liam Flynn is at the helm of the Sabres for the first time and would be looking for Marcus Ng to continue last week's form, in which he scored 21 points.

Central Districts Lions v Norwood Flames, Sat. March 24, 7:45pm at Starplex

Ricky Simpson would be satisfied with his victory against South, in which he received the expected contributions from Jarrod Graves and Justin Clayton, but would be even happier with the efforts Mark Egel (14 points and 9 rebounds) and Matt Atkins (17 points). With a younger group this year, Centrals will need good efforts from everyone to be competitive and youngsters Rob Cameron and Shannon Hoffman should get opportunities to impress. With Todd Matthews available for a full season, the Flames now have all the pieces of the puzzle to emulate the results of Simon Pritchard's 1999 team. Their front court of David Cooper, Dan Thompson, and the more perimeter-oriented Keith Krause rivals North's as the best in the league, and should be too strong for the Lions in this game.

South Adelaide Panthers v Forestville Eagles, Saturday, March 17, 8:15pm at Marion

South struggled in its first round game against Centrals, despite a large advantage on the boards. The opportunity for big men Agel Machar, who was ejected in the third quarter, and Steve Pilkington to play together will be exciting, although they will have their hands full against Forestville's Kane Oakley who pulled down 18 boards last week. 36er Matt Sutton had a quiet double double first up, but will need to play more of a scoring role without Brenton Campbell in the lineup. The match up between Tom McKenzie and Trent Fildes will be a highlight.

Central Districts Lions v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Starplex

The Lions demonstrated the evenness of the league by upsetting South in round 1, but will find it tougher against the Bearcats, who bring Blake Truslove into a group which itself exceeded expectations against North last week. A great game from Player-of-the-week Anthony Spadavecchia, and good support from Chris Molitor and Kris Davis has given coach Dion Grieger the difficult decision of who to omit from the starting lineup. Centrals' Justin Clayton went close to Player-of-the-week honours himself, with 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Jarrod Graves, Mark Egel and Matt Atkins also had good games. Centrals would be looking to capitalize on a run of home court games to start the season, but West's NBL experience of Truslove and Mann should give them the edge.

Southern Tigers v Sturt Sabres, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Morphett Vale

The Tigers will be looking to make the most of their considerable home court advantage, and coach Heath Jury, the only rookie men's coach to win in round 1, will be happy with another three figure output from his team. The deep Tigers backcourt, which includes the experienced Matt Clarke, Joel Goodenough and Tristan Braithwaite, and juniors Phil Brown and Paul Smith, should have a good battle with the high-scoring Ng brothers Darren and Marcus, and former SA Metro representatives Nathan Vaughan and Mitch Simmons should get opportunities, as will Mark Bauer. The Tigers big men will have a tough challenge against Jordan Dodman, and how they choose to defend him will be interesting.

North Adelaide Rockets v Eastern Mavericks, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Hillcrest

Fans at the Crest will get their first home look at Dusty Rychart and Ryan Kersten, who will be playing their second game in four days since arriving back in Australia. The Rockets are already stacked at the guard position, and although 36er Erik Burdon didn't shoot well last week, his form in the pre-season has been exceptional. Leif Burdon went four for five from the perimeter, and Justin Schueller now has a bevy of talented guards at his disposal. The coaching battle between Schueller and Richard Hill will be interesting, the coaches having worked together with SA Under 20 teams for the last couple of years, and would know each others philosophies inside out. The match up between Brad Bungey, who survived a charge for an obscene gesture with a one-match suspended sentence, and Nick Hambour, will be entertaining, but Hill will need to have a plan to stop Rychart.

South Adelaide Panthers v Norwood Flames, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Marion

The Panthers' second game at the Ark this weekend will be a great test for Agel Machar, whose performance last season was impressive, and Steve Pilkington, who spent last year in the UK. They face the strongest front-court in the competition in David Cooper, Dan Thompson and Keith Krause, and Cooper's improved perimeter shooting in the NBL this year means that all three have the versatility to play inside and out. Thompson, who sat out last year due to injury, is one of the better athletes in the league, and his return to competition is a boost for the Flames, who would be looking to go one better than last year's third placing. Perennial assists leader Danny Kosmider may shift to the two spot this year to make way for Ken Carter and they will most likely match up on fellow point guards Todd Matthews and Andrew Webber.
