Women's Previews - Rounds 2 and 3

Jess Mahony

Woodville Warriors v Eastern Mavericks, Sat. March 24, 6:30pm at DH Dome

Lynne Holland's Warriors were impressive in the first week, getting within 12 points of the solid Southern Tigers. Brooke Gathercole continued her fine pre-season form, top scoring with 14 points, and the reliable Jodie Barrett contributed 11 rebounds. Eastern upset 2006 grand finalists Forestville, with good leadership from Amanda Williams and a double double from Jane Symons, who has recently transferred from West. Brenton Johnston was relieved to open his ABA career with a win and would hope to go into tomorrow's game again his former club with an unblemished record.

Southern Tigers v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat. March 24, 6:30pm at Morphett Vale

The Rockets won in a double overtime epic against West last week, while the Tigers 12 point win against Woodville was tougher than one might expect. Tracey Beatty's WNBL season could well be a precursor to her domination the Central ABL and her double double should be one of plenty. The starting backcourt of Tamara Walker and Leah Cannon is working well, with Walker scoring 4 three pointers in her 27 point effort against Woodville, and Cannon picking up 9 boards and 5 assists. Mike McKay had match-winning performances from Tania Dhu and Erin Lorenzini last week, and also has talented juniors Lauren Mansfield, Jess Keller and Lizzie Wright in the rotation. The Rockets will struggle to contain Beatty, but more even match ups in the guard positions should make for a great game.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Sturt Sabres, Sat. March 24, 6:30pm at Port Adelaide

Jess Mahony's return from a knee injury suffered four years ago is a highlight for all who know her, and to score 15 points with all eyes watching was impressive. West fought back from a 15 point deficit against North, and Lightning Assistant Coach John Gillies will be hoping for a better start against a Sturt team that opened well against Norwood. Marcus Wong would be happy his reigning premiers will give up the "favourites" mantle to West this year, although with the Sabres returning all players bar Sonia Dametto, they won't be far off the mark. Grand Final MVP Angela Marino is in WNBL form, winning the player-of-the-week award, but might have a tougher time of it against Mahony. The Bearcats boast the best front court in the league with Lightning players Lauren King, Sam Woosnam, Kate Jenner and Cherie Smith, but the Bowley triumvirate is more than capable of making this a decent contest.

South Adelaide Panthers v Forestville Eagles, Sat. March 24, 6:30pm at Marion

South coach Glenn Shaw made good use of the first ever bye of the Central ABL, watching Forestville against Eastern last week. The Panthers have added Kerrin Truslove from West and Sarah Peddle from Southern to last year's team and have the potential to be a real force in this year's league. Former Halls medallist Vikki Kelson and import Jenine Browne return to a group that would have the goal of finals contention. The Eagles have a recent history of success, competing in the last 6 Central ABL Grand Finals, but will find it tougher this year in the absence of court leader Narelle Lindsay. Kate Malpass impressed in her first game since arriving from WA, but the absence of Rebecca Duke due to injury will mean extra pressure on Malpass and Emma Pawlowski to perform.

Southern Tigers v Sturt Sabres, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Morphett Vale

Sturt venture South to the Cage with the goal of maintaining a good record over the first month of the season, while awaiting their return to the Sabre Cave. Simone Nelson has returned to Adelaide after a stint in the US, and gets a chance to perform against her former club, and Tamara Walker, whose opportunities have increased since leaving the Sabres, could have a similar motivation. Noel Robertson and Marcus Wong were both successful in their first outings, but this game will be much tougher. There'll be great battles between Tracey Beatty and Monique Bowley, and Angela Marino and Leah Cannon, all with WNBL experience.

North Adelaide Rockets v Eastern Mavericks, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Hillcrest

Fresh from a win in his first game as an ABA coach, Brenton Johnston returns to his former club with a chance to demonstrate what he can achieve at senior level. His Mavericks have added Shay Bayley from Centrals whose size and strength was a factor in their win against Forestville, and Jamie Fricker, in her first game since transferring from Southern, provided an early spark which triggered a match-winning lead. The emotion of last week's double overtime thriller may have been draining for North, and while the Rockets can expect solid performances from Erin Lorenzini and Tania Dhu, Mike McKay would be hoping for contributions from others to lighten the load on these two. Expect a good performance from Amanda Williams who might start on Lorenzini.

South Adelaide Panthers v Norwood Flames, Sun. March 25, 3:00pm at Marion

Damian Weeks is a veteran of junior coaching at both club and state level, and Norwood's junior program flourished during his time as coaching director. He has gone with a group of local talent in his return to ABA coaching, and while they might struggle initially, the NCAA experience of Emily Fryters, coupled with Kim Olsen and Nicole Romeo's involvement in state junior teams should see the Flames have a steady improvement throughout the season. South go into this game as favourites and as well as the expected performances of Vikkie Kelson and Jenine Browne, expect a breakout game from Abby Williams, who doubles as assistant coach of South's men's team this year, where she enjoys a rare opportunity to tell brother Steve what to do.
