Symons' Mavs over Simons' Eagles

A double double from former Bearcat Jane Symons helped Eastern to a 66-46 win over a Forestville team searching for scorers.

In her first game for Forestville since leaving the Rockets, Emma Pawlowski hit two early 18 foot jump shots, but the introduction of Jamie Fricker triggered a 10-1 Mavs run to end the quarter which included two Fricker layups and a 2 bounce jump shot from Amanda Williams. Eastern went into the first break up 16-10.

After spending much of the first quarter posting up, Kate Malpass demonstrated her ability to play on the perimeter in the second, following up a 3 pointer with an 18 foot shot off the glass. However, not enough Eagles were scoring, and Eastern extended their lead to 11 via three pointers from Fricker, Symons and Shay Bayley.

16 year old Kadina point guard Kelsey Ireland opened her ABA scoring account with a three in the third quarter, but an 8 point quarter from Debra Wilcox kept the margin at 11 at 3/4 time.
Williams' speed up the floor set up a trademark no look pass to Wilcox on transition, and the lead blew out 16 after a Forestville time out. Consecutive three pointers from Jess Fergus and Dee Ranford gave Forestville a glimmer of hope, but a Symons block on Ranford with two minutes to go signalled the end of Forestville's run.

Mavs coach Brenton Johnston started his ABA career with a well deserved victory. Regular contributors Amanda Williams (11 points and 6 assists) and Deb Wilcox (16 points) played well, as did Jane Symons (18 points and and 10 rebounds). Lightning guard Dee Ranford had 27 points and 14 rebounds for Forestville, but Forestville's 29% field goal percentage in the absence of the retired Narelle Lindsay would be a concern for 2006 coach of the year, Sharon Simons.
