Ng, Warriors rally for win, regain first

The Woodville Warriors are back on top of the Premier Ladder, after coming from behind to defeat the Norwood Flames 77-70, at St Clair on Saturday.

Trailing 43-52 late with 2:38 to go in third period, the Warriors outscored the Flames 23-6 over the next eight minutes. Less than a minute before the Warriors fell nine points down, Darren Ng picked up a technical foul, after complaining of being fouled on a three-point shot. Prior to his indiscretion, Ng had been unusually quiet, but the momentum of the game – and Ng’s performance – altered after this moment.

Ng scored 16 of his 18 points after his technical foul, and the Warriors regained the high energy levels that they began the game with. As the Flames’ transition game faded, they continued to look inside for Jacob Holmes (11 points, 11 rebounds), but it did not gather them many points – Holmes shot just 4-17 for the game.

At the other end, the Warriors got some terrific efforts from Ian Nixson (14 points, 5 rebounds), who had back-to-back three-point plays, and Fraser Gehrich (9 rebounds, 8 points), who was a menace on the offensive glass. With 4:37 to go and a 66-58 Warrior lead, it appeared the home side was headed for a victory.

Yet the Flames were not done with. An 8-3 run got them to within three points, and had the chance to tie when David Webber (18 points, 7 rebounds) launched a three-pointer. The shot was just off the mark, and the next two possessions went the Warriors’ way.

Ng was off on a three-pointer and the Flames looked set for a defensive rebound, but Gehrich had drawn a foul off the ball. Gehrich made both foul shots for a five point lead.

On the Flames’ next possession, Holmes was off on a jump shot. Although he got the offensive rebound, he stood up off the floor, and was called for travel.

The Flames still had another three shots to make it a one possession game, but were unable to score. The Warriors made their free throws, and held on for victory.

With the return of Mitchell Creek (17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals), the Warriors brought strong intensity to their game in the early going. The Warriors had plenty of fast break scoring opportunities in the first quarter, after playing at a slower pace in the previous week’s loss to Forestville.

The Flames hung in and did well to keep the game relatively close. They got into the game more in the second quarter, with Matthew Lycett (20 points, 7 rebounds) prolific.

After Andrew Webber (12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) matched his first quarter effort with a final possession layup, the Flames had fought back to a 35-35 tie at half-time. Their strong finish to the first half translated to a positive start to the second half, but the Warriors recovered to complete a 2-0 regular season sweep.

The Warriors, now 15-4, travel to Pasadena to play Sturt (10-9) next Saturday. The Flames, also 15-4, will welcome the 12-7 Rockets to Mars.

Flames’ streak hits 19, after getting past Warriors

The Norwood Flames have improved their record to 19-0, after defeating the Woodville Warriors 82-72, at St Clair on Saturday.

When Jessica Foley (15 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists) scored with 8:06 remaining in the first quarter, the Flames took a 6-4 lead, and remained in front for the remainder of the contest. The Warriors did well to avoid letting the Flames get out to a big advantage, and were only outscored by three after quarter-time. Ultimately, the first quarter cost the Warriors, where they were outscored 17-24.

The home side did get to within one point of the league-leaders in the third period, but led by Foley and Marisa Stabile (16 points, 8 rebounds), the Flames answered with a 16-4 run. The Warriors fought back to within six points and had four shots at reducing the gap further, but they were to be denied on each occasion.

The Flames were up seven points after three quarters, and despite some good play from Callan Taylor (24 points, 10 rebounds) and Ursula Richards (18 points, 7 rebounds), the Warriors never got any closer. They were not helped by foul trouble – they had 21 fouls called on them to 12 for the Flames, with starters Kimberley Porplycia (11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) and Tess Keenan (5 points, 2 steals) fouling out.

Taylor Ortlepp (19 points, 5 rebounds), Rebecca Duke (10 points, 9 assists, 5 steals) and Elizabeth Keane (10 points, 8 rebounds) also made significant contributions to the Flames’ win.

The Flames tackle North (14-5) at Mars next week. It is their first meeting at the venue since the Flames were eliminated in the 2014 Preliminary Final. The Warriors (11-8) face the 10-9 Sabres at Pasadena.
