Round 8 Preview: Women

By James Woite

North (6-2) v Southern (3-5)

After getting back on the winners’ list last week, the North Adelaide Rockets and Southern Tigers will be going for back-to-back wins when they meet at Hillcrest.

The Rockets overcame Forestville 71-60 at Wayville, improving to 6-2 in the process, and ending a two game losing streak.

The Tigers’ three game losing run is now finished, after their 78-58 win at Centrals. They are 3-5, and only one win behind South and Eastern.

The Rockets managed to sweep the Tigers in 2014.

South (4-5) v Sturt (5-2)

In the Match of the Round, the South Adelaide Panthers can get to .500 for the first time in 2015, if they can defeat the Sturt Sabres.

The Panthers started 0-5, but have replied with four straight wins. They came from behind to beat West 62-59 in their last match.

The Sabres won for the first time in three games last round, holding on to defeat Eastern, and entrenching themselves in the top four.

The Sabres went 2-0 against the Panthers last season.

West Adelaide Bearcats (2-6) v Central District Lions (0-7)

Having suffered a couple of heart-breaking losses in the past few weeks, the West Adelaide Bearcats could afford to do without a close finish against the Central District Lions.

Last Saturday, for the second time in two home games, the Bearcats’ scoring dried up in the latter half of a fourth quarter. And they once again lost the lead and in turn the game, this time to South.

The Lions are still winless, having been defeated at home against Southern last week.

The Bearcats won both matches against the Lions last season.

Woodville (5-3) v Forestville (2-6)

The Woodville Warriors will be playing for a fifth win in six games when they host the Forestville Eagles.

The Warriors had their four game winning run ended by Norwood last round, despite holding an early lead. They are 5-3.

The Eagles fell for the fifth time in six matches, going down to North. At 2-6, they need to put a winning run together soon, or they will fall a long way back from the top five.

The Eagles won two crucial close matches against the Warriors last season.

Eastern (4-4) v Norwood (9-0)

The Norwood Flames will be attempting to go one step better than they did in 2014, when they make the long trip to battle the Eastern Mavericks.

The Flames commenced last season with nine consecutive wins, before falling in their 10th fixture against Sturt. They are once again 9-0 this year, after defeating Woodville 66-54 last week.

The Mavericks came close to a fifth win last Saturday, falling six points shy of Sturt. They are 4-4.

The Flames swept the Mavericks 2-0 in their 2014 series.
