Sabres Defeat Tigers

Southern Tigers (68) lost to Sturt Sabres (80)

A competitive contest between two sides looking to reignite their seasons saw the Sturt men prevail by 12 points over a diligent Southern Tigers at Morphett Vale on Saturday night.

Both sides owned double digit leads throughout, but both coming at opposing ends of the game. The Tigers flew off to a speedy start, opening the game with an 11-2 run. Sturt’s Dexter Moore failed to hit any of his six field goal attempts in the opening quarter, as Sturt shot at 29 per cent from the field, allowing a 6 point gap for the Tigers at quarter time.

A much more even second quarter saw Moore and the Tigers' Craig Catford blitz the court offensively, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively for the quarter. The Sabres began with an 8-0 run to kick off the second quarter, helping them bring the scoreline to 44-42 at the half, with the Tigers conserving the small advantage.

However in the second half it was evident that the crowd had bought tickets to the Dexter Moore show, as he gained the hot hand and put on a three point exhibition for everyone. With help from Jordan Heading and Tim Klaosen, the Tigers were kept to a mere 10 points for the third quarter as Sturt looked to have taken the reins, leading 61-54 at the final break.

Though the Tigers seemed to hold their composure as Catford made a stern return to the floor, hitting a big three to make it a four-point game. Five team fouls for Sturt with five minutes to go in the final quarter made things difficult for them defensively, trying to sustain their lead. But opportunities were rushed and missed by the Tigers, influencing their own defeat, going down 80-68 at the final buzzer.

Moore was significant in keeping the Tigers from breaking their win-less record against Sturt at Morphett Vale, which has stood since 2008, scoring 33 points for the night - including six from behind the arc. Sam McDaniel tore down the boards with 16 rebounds for the Tigers, while Sam Johns top scored with 19 points.
