West Adelaide Women Win On The Road

The Lady Bearcats ventured north this week and after a dour struggle for three quarters, managed to notch up their third away win with a 20 point victory over the young Lions.

Scores were tied at 16-16 after the first quarter with Tamika Dukes proving hard to control on 7 points for Centrals and the Bearcats sharing their scoring around.

The second quarter continued in the same vein with the lead changing hands several times. For the Lions Brianna Wedding (8) and Tamika Dukes (6) scored all but three of their team’s points for the quarter while Alana Nairn stepped up with 6 points for the visitors.

The Bearcats managed to carve out a 3 point lead in the third quarter but failed to close out the final 5 minutes of the quarter allowing the Lions to sneak back in and establish a slim 2 point lead at the halftime break 31-33.

The half time message spurred the Lady Bearcats on to win the 3rd term by 8 as Dukes still scored 10 points but had little help from her team-mates. From 44-44 Amy Porter had 6 of the Bearcats' next 11 points and when Meg McLeod drained a 3 on the buzzer, the Bearcats went into the break with the momentum behind them and a 6 point lead.

McLeod opened the scoring in the last quarter and when the lead was out to 10 the Lady Bearcats looked safe but Tamika Dukes and Brianna Wedding were doing their best to stop the flow, managing to peg back the lead to 5. However the next 20 points went to the Bearcats and they ran out easy winners in the end 78-58.

Stand out performances by Tamika Dukes (Lions) with 28 points and 17 rebounds and Alana Nairn (Bearcats) with 19 and 8 led their respective teams. The rebound count was even but with the Bearcats causing 20 more turnovers and making 14 more steals the game should have been won more easily. They need to work on their 38% shooting if they want to challenge any of the higher teams but will be pleased to have maintained 6th place on the ladder with the hope of adding another win against winless South Adelaide next week. The young Lions play North Adelaide and the fans at Starplex should be treated to a great duel between Jo Hill and Tamika Dukes.

West Adelaide Bearcats 78 (Alana Nairn 19, Ashlea Vordermaier 13, Amy Porter 12)
Central District Lions 58 (Tamika Dukes 28, Brianna Wedding 13, Caitlin Arnold 6)
