Bearcats into five after win over Woodville

The Warriors played well in the opening two rounds, but for the second straight night, the match was never a contest.

Knowing they would have fresher legs if necessary, the Bearcats built an early 20-2 lead and never looked back.

The impressive part was the way they worked as a team and shared the ball, with only Taya Crockford scoring multiple baskets in the run.

The Warriors failed to score a layup for the quarter. Their first field goal did not come until substitute Emily Sims hit a trey with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter, which fellow substitute Jasmine Howe duplicated 24 seconds later.

Jessica Koch scored the Warriors’ first two-pointer on their first offence of the second quarter, as the Warriors closed to within 11-24.

However, the Bearcats went on a 15-5 run to build a 23 point lead, with Jess Mahony scoring 7 points and adding a couple of dimes.

Leading 39-18 at half-time, the Bearcats always maintained a solid buffer, which grew to 56-33 by the end of the quarter.

The Warriors only managed eight points in the fourth, with the Bearcats’ top players getting an early rest.

Mahony finished as the Bearcats’ top scorer with 12 points, while also dishing out a game-high 10 assists.

Crockford (10 points, 13 rebounds) also had a double-double, with 11 of the 12 Bearcats hitting the scoresheet. Likewise, only one player did not contribute a rebound.

Howe (10 points) was the only Warrior in double figures.

The Warriors shot just 22 per cent from the field, half as much as the Bearcats. They also committed 31 turnovers.

West Adelaide Bearcats 73 (Jessica Mahony 12, Taya Crockford 10, Alana Nairn 8)
Woodville Warriors 41 (Jasmin Howe 10, Katherine Perkas 7, Jessica Koch 7)
