Wyatt's Threes add Insult to Injury

Aaron Wyatt helped Woodville continue their unbeaten start to the season, icing a victory at Mars with two long threes.

To make matters worse for Norwood, Matt Lycett, who scored 35 points 6 days earlier, left the game in the 2nd quarter with a suspected broken foot.

Woodville had the best of the first quarter, despite Wyatt picking up two early fouls. Jarrod Graves ended the quarter with a 3 pointer coming off an on-ball screen then a back court steal and a layup.

Wyatt’s scoring kicked in in the 2nd, and a lightning-fast crossover in transition left Brad Davidson struggling to find a matchup for him.

Nevertheless, Norwood regained the lead by simply outscoring Woodville, and with Keith Krause hitting three pointers from the trail position he has owned for years, Norwood looked like its old self. Andrew Webber hit a three off a set play, and Norwood entered the break up 45-42.

The second half started as a seesawing battle with neither team able to gain an ascendency.  Krause hit another three from the top, but Cameron Wilson scored 7 Woodville points in a row to keep the Warriors in control.

When Matt Long put back his own miss and converted the three point play, it seemed to be against the flow, but within minutes, Norwood had a 10 point lead. Even more suddenly, Woodville scored 14 unanswered points across three quarter time break, then went on another run to lead by 8. Norwood reduced the lead to 3 and with 5 minutes to go, it was anyone’s game.

Enter Aaron Wyatt.

Wyatt’s first three came just before the shot clock buzzer and his second, under as much pressure, came 40 seconds later. This triggered a 15-0 run which wasn’t ended until the result was beyond doubt, the Warriors running away to win 90-74.

Andrew Webber and Ed Millard were Norwood’s best, scoring 15 and 16 respectively, and Jake Sadauskas’ 10 was efficient, on a night where Norwood shot 33% from the floor.

In his third game in the CABL, Wyatt scored 33, eclipsing the 22 he had in round 1, and sending the message to the league that the Warriors have yet another weapon.

Darren Ng struggled to score, but did significant damage by drawing two defenders coming off on-ball screens, creating scoring opportunities for others two or three passes ahead.

Cam Wilson made two great hustle plays for which he is so well known – one in the second quarter chasing down a loose ball that everyone else had forgotten about, and another deep in Norwood territory early in fourth quarter – both of which triggered fast breaks and gave Woodville momentum.

Woodville 90 (Aaron Wyatt 33, Cameron Wilson 19, Darren Ng 15)
Norwood 74
(Ed Millard 16, Andrew Webber 15, Jake Sadauskas 10, Keith Krause 10)
