Season Preview - Sturt Women

The gist: The Sabres had a rare bad year in 2012, struggling to overcome the loss of their best players from 2011. However, they have made good signings in the offseason, adding the likes of Molly Lewis and Hannah Bowley from the Adelaide Lightning and Brigid Bowley from Lithuania.

The stat: In 2012, the Sabres won only 40% of the games that they did in 2011. Their drop from 15 wins to six wins was the worst decline in the competition.

The star: Brigid Bowley put up good numbers in her most recent season in Lithuania, averaging 10.2 ppg and 5.5 rpg in 28 minutes. She will likely form a strong tandem with Hannah Bowley and Lewis.

The x-factor: Amy Shaw was the Sabres’ best played in 2012, averaging 12.8 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Will her numbers improve or decline now the Bowleys and Lewis are on board?

The glass half-full: The Sabres’ cubs will be a year more developed, and this time will have some experienced veterans to learn from. With a good blend of talent, youth and experience, the only way, it appears, is up.

The glass half-empty: Hannah Bowley and Lewis did not have the benefit of a pre-season with the team and it may take them time to blend with the group.

The verdict: The Sabres will be back in the postseason where they belong.
