Stars of the Past and Present honoured at the Halls Woollacott Dinner
Basketball stars of the past and present will be on hand on Sunday August 26 for Basketball SA’s prestigious Halls Woollacott dinner.
The night features the presentation of the celebrated Halls and Woollacott Medals, as well as a number of other awards for each of the men’s and women’s leagues including All Star Five, Coach of the Year, Referee of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
The Halls and Woollacott medals, for the “Fairest and Most Brilliant” players in the 2012 Central ABL season, are awarded based on votes cast by referees after each game. Also on offer are the Most Valuable Player awards, which are based on votes cast by coaches.
Olympian and Local Legend
Dual Olympian and adopted South Australian Jenni Screen will count the votes for the Halls Medal. Master of Ceremonies Ben Hook will conduct a brief interview with Jenny, fresh from her bronze medal performance with the Opals at the London Olympics.
Adelaide 36ers legend Scott Ninnis will count the votes for the Woollacott Medal. In addition to his well known playing and coaching career with the Adelaide 36ers, Scott won a Woollacott medal in 1995 with South Adelaide.
Former Winners Honoured
Basketball SA invites former Halls and Woollacott medal winners to assist with the presentation of the Most Valuable Player awards, and this year we will be joined by three-time Halls medallist Jenny Cheesman and two-time Woollacott medallist Mark Lampshire.
Jenny Cheesman is a true legend of Australian basketball, captaining Australia at two Olympics, and also representing the Opals at four World Championships. Her Halls medals were with Glenelg (a forerunner to the Noarlunga City and Southern Tigers) in 1975, 1977 and 1978.
Mark Lampshire is another former star of our sport. He represented Australia at the World Championships in Puerto Rico in 1974, and won Woollacott medals with West Torrens, the forerunner to Forestville, in 1979 and 1980.
2012 Award Winners
A full list of 2012 award winners, including the final leaderboard for the Halls and Woollacott medals, will be distributed to media and published on the Central ABL website (http://www.centralabl.com.au) immediately after the event.
