Borrego, Minear lift Forestville to fifth win in six games

Forestville has continued its mid-season resurgence with a 79-52 home win over the Warriors on Saturday.

Woodville was right in the game at half-time, trailing by just six, but was outscored 21-42 in a lopsided second half.

The undersized Warriors were outrebounded 30-44, and shot just 34% compared to 41% for the Eagles.

Carla Borrego again looked to be the mid-season signing of the year with 25 points, 16 rebounds and 4 steals for Forestville.

Borrego was just too tall for her opponent Claire Christie, who stands at seven centimetres shorter than the Eagles’ Centre.

Georgia Minear had an excellent night with 22 points on 9/15 shooting, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Jess Fergus had 11 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, completing another solid all-round performance.

Ursula Richards, who had averaged 24 shots per game over her previous five, was limited to just 13 shots against Forestville, who did a good job of denying the league’s third leading scorer the basketball.

Richards connected five times, finishing with a team-high 15 points, as well as 4 steals.

Despite her size disadvantage, Christie put in a great effort with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Borrego asserted her dominance with nine early points, before being substituted with 5.15 remaining in the first, and the Eagles leading 13-8.

Five of Borrego’s points came off offensive rebounds.

With Borrego off, Forestville scored the next six points for an 11 point buffer, before the Warriors scored the next six.

Borrego rounded out the quarter with two from the line, giving the Eagles a 21-14 lead.

Woodville played its best basketball of the night during the second quarter.

Borrego scored five more points as Forestville extended its lead to 12, before the Warriors got back into the game with the next 10 points.

Richards hit two treys, while Ashleigh White and Vida Bojanic also scored.

Borrego was subbed out again with 2.55 remaining in the half and the Eagles up just three, but an inspired patch of play from Fergus and a couple of field goals from Minear ensured Forestville would whether the storm to secure a six-point half-time year.

The Eagles had been poor in third quarters over the past couple of seasons, but there third on Saturday was an exception in a big way.

Two free throws from Richards had the Warriors within four with 7.32 left in the quarter, before Monica Bello started a 13-0 run with a three-pointer, and then capped it off with an assists to Fergus for a three-point play.

Threes from Minear and Bello again and a two from Alex Duncan extended the streak to 21-2, before Christie knocked down a bomb to salvage something for the visitors.

The Eagles wound up winning the third 23-9, giving them a 60-40 at the end of three.

The Warriors never got any closer than 15 in the fourth, with Forestville always in control.

Borrego gave the crowd some amusement late by leading a fast break, only to badly miss the layup.

Minear then got on the end of an assist from Jamie-Lee Bow to complete the 27 point win.

Forestville verdict: It was not all that long ago that the Eagles were out of the five and struggling just to win, but all of a sudden, there is a different feel about the team. With the additions of Borrego and Bello, Forestville is finally getting something out of its Centre and Point Guard positions (arguably the two most important positions in basketball), which was not happening on a regular basis at the start of the season. The Eagles are strong at the 2, 3 and 4, so now have a solid all-round line-up. The win over Woodville secures Forestville’s position in fourth. Next up is the red-hot Panthers, winners of their past four games.

Woodville verdict: The Warriors played a very good first half, which is something positive to be taken out of the game. If not for the height of Borrego, Woodville could easily have been in front at half-time. The Warriors have a young, small side, so patches like the 2-21 run they conceded in the third can be expected. However, they have shown much improvement since the last time they played Forestville. Their next game is at home to the Tigers.
