Sturt regain form to defeat Flames in cliffhanger

Darren Ng

As the reigning champs the Sturt Sabres have had a rocky start to their season, but have come up with the upset win over current number one Norwood flames 61-59.

The main player for Sturt here who carried his team was Darren Ng, who put on a show for the home crowd with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and sparked his team most of the way.

The game was closely contested the whole match but with Sturt leading at every break. Norwood’s Andrew Webber provided good input throughout the game with 16 points and 2 steals.

After a turnover by Corey Ottey with 30 seconds left Sturt’s coach Scott Butler called a timeout, Sturt then inbounded the ball and wasted some clutch time before Jan Warbout was fouled and sent to the line. He hit 1 of 2 putting the Sabres up by 2 with 9 seconds left.

Andrew Webber, hero of the 2008 Grand Final, was entrusted with the last shot of the game to send it into over time, but unluckily missed it from the elbow. Jacob Holmes grabbed the strong board to seal Sturt’s 5th win of the season and coupled with its win over North on Sunday, put them into equal 4th position on the ladder.
