Women's Game Review - Forestville v Southern

Mia Newley returned to her devastating best with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots as Forestville ended Southern's winning streak at five with a 74-54 victory at Wayville. In a very defensive-minded game in which the two teams combined for 34 per cent shooting and 46 turnovers, Forestville Forward Alex Duncan knocked down three 3-pointers in a 23-1 stretch over the third and fourth quarters which proved pivotal in the victory. Duncan finished with a season-high of 11 points, whilst Jess Fergus, Megan Kermond, and Jamie-Lee Bow also scored in double figures, and Jess Mahony registered 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Madelaine Cunningham top-scored for the visitors with 19 points, whilst Rosalie Cutri had 10 rebounds and 4 steals.

Southern went into the game in superb form, having won their last five games after a 1-6 start. However, the competition's surprise packets were no match for the second-placed Eagles in the first term, falling behind 13-23 after the first period. After failing to score in her previous encounter, Newley hit the scoresheet within 17 seconds, as Forestville jumped out to a commanding lead after the first three and a half minutes. The quarter also saw Kelsey Ireland return to action off the bench, having missed the previous two games through injury.

Forestville's ten point quarter-time lead didn't last long, as the Tigers began the second with a 14-4 run, with Teresa Kinross knocking down a jumper to tie the scores at 27 with 4.32 to go in the quarter. However, three 3-pointers followed on consecutive possessions from Newley, Megan Kermond, Newley again got Forestville's lead back out to nine, then a Jess Fergus jumper and another 3 from Jamie-Lee Bow capped off a 14-0 run, before Stephanie Gates hit a jumper to reduce the gap to 41-29 at half-time. Newley was the player of the half with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Just like the second quarter, the Tigers began the third quarter as the better team. Forestville had not won a third-quarter since May 8, losing their last four third-quarters by an average margin of 10.25 points. This trend looked likely to continue, as Cutri's steal and breakaway lay-up initiated a 16-6 run over the first 6.26 of the quarter, with Forestville Coach Sharon Simons calling two time-outs in this stretch. However, a beautiful post move from Ashleigh Spencer would be Southern's final basket of the quarter, as Forestville forced the Tigers into four consecutive turnovers late in the quarter, and using an 8-0 run that included two 3-pointers from Alex Duncan and a put-back jumper from Jess Fergus to get their lead back out to ten at three-quarter time. Such was the Eagles' dominance in the quarter's final minutes that the lead really should have been greater, but they would have been happy to have avoided another third quarter “collapse” after Southern threatened to take control.

Mia Newley's third 3-pointer got the Eagles off to the perfect start to the fourth, before Alex Duncan connected on her third triple to put Forestville up 61-45 with 8.45 to go. In the midst of this stellar shooting, Forestville displayed some amazing defence, with Southern hitting the ring just once in their first four possessions of the quarter, due to two turnovers, one airball, and a Newley rejection. Combine this with the fact that a Stephanie Gates deflected shot was the only shot the Tigers would take in the remaining three minutes of the third, and Forestville had kept the Tigers to just one legitimate shot attempt in almost six minutes. In the meantime, the Eagles piled on 17 points, before a free throw from Cutri ended a run of eleven straight scoreless possessions for Southern. Forestville continued their onslaught, pushing the lead out to as much as 25, before Simons substituted stars Newley and Mahony for the remaining three minutes as the Tigers reduce the margin back to twenty by the final siren.

This win, coupled with their 75-69 victory over the Eastern Mavericks in the Sunday encounter, means the Eagles now sit in second position with twelve wins and just two losses. Forestville takes on Sturt next Saturday night at Pasadena in a match that could go a long way to deciding the minor premiership, with the Eagles keen to avenge their 50-49 loss on April 17. Southern, who thrashed Centrals 88-55 in their Sunday match, has fallen out the five after consecutive victories to North Adelaide. They take on South at Marion next Saturday night, whom they were defeated by 70-65 in their previous encounter.
