Women's Game Previews - Round 15

(Includes Round 6 results when the Teams last played)

Norwood Flames v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, July 3rd, 6.30pm at Mars
North 77 (Jo Hill, Bec Lock 16, Kirsty Williams 15) defeated
Norwood 63 (Amanda MacDermot 12, Rebecca Duke 11, Kate Shierlaw, Rachel Herrick 7)

North having climbed back into the top five at the expense of the Southern Tigers will be keen to keep their winning form from the double header weekend intact. With even four quarter performances against both the Lions and Panthers, they can approach this match with confidence. On the other hand Norwood beat Woodville on Saturday but lost on Sunday to the Bearcats scoring only 50 points, their second lowest score of the season. Whether Jess Fergus, Rebecca Duke and Amanda MacDermot are available will have a big bearing on the result.

Woodville Warriors v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, July 3rd, 6.30pm at St Clair
West 84 (Sam Woosnam 24, Nikita-Lee Martin 16, Kate Walsh 14) defeated
Woodville 61 (Ashleigh White 22, MacKenzie O'Neil 8, Katherine Perkas 7)

For the Woodville women it doesn't get any easier. Last weekend they faced two of the top three sides in Norwood and Sturt, while this week they face West Adelaide who lost on Saturday to South, the winning basket scored 6 seconds from full time, and on Sunday they disposed of Norwood by setting up a match winning break by halftime. Woodville were competitive in both games but struggled offensively without the services of MacKenzie O'Neil. West has a number players capable of posting big numbers, led by Sam Woosnam who had a triple double against South, Nikita-Lee Martin, Irene Sourlatzis and Trudy Holland. The Bearcats will be too strong and have too many scoring options for Woodville to win this one at home.

Sturt Sabres v Forestville Eagles, Sat, July 3rd, 6.30pm at Pasadena
Sturt 50 (Bree Farley 13, Caroline Burgess 10, Monique Bowley 8) defeated
Forestville 49 (Jess Fergus 17, Tara Buttress 9, Jessica Mahony 4)

With top versus second this should be one of the matches of the round after both teams won their two games played last weekend. Forestville's Mia Newley found shooting touch to finish with a double of 27 points against Southern and 25 points against Eastern. For the Sabres, Caroline Burgess was also productive with 16 points against Eastern and a double – double against the Warriors with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Sabres had an off shooting afternoon against Woodville, shooting zero from eight from outside the arc, whereas the Eagles faired a little better shooting 5 from 24 at 21%. With both teams capable of defending the keyway the success of the outside shooters could be the difference between winning and losing this contest. With only 3 matches remaining after this one, a Forestville victory by 2 points or more could see them finish minor premiers. Sturt have been the form side all season, will they maintain that form for this match and secure a 2 game buffer at the head of the table.

Central Districts Lions v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, July 3rd, 6.30pm at Starplex
Eastern 88 (Tess Madgen 41, Deb Wilcox 18, Jo Robbertsen 9) defeated
Centrals 41 (Dayna Roberts 17, Elizabeth Oermann 7, Amber Land 6)

Centrals enter this match after suffering a couple of heavy losses against Southern and North from last weekend's double header. Eastern faced the top two sides in Sturt and Forestville losing both, but they were more than competitive. When the sides last met, Tess Madgen who is averaging 29.9 ppg and 12.5 rpg finished with a season high 41 points. Madgen will again be one of the leading players for Eastern as will Amber Land for the Lions, who is averaging 17.7 ppg and 13.3 rpg.  Eastern will not want to be the first side to fall victim to the Lions this season and would be expected to win by a comfortable margin. They are nearly at full strength with only Stephanie Talbot not available for selection

South Adelaide Panthers v Southern Tigers, Sat, July 3rd, 6.30pm at Marion
South 70 (Claire Johnson, Tameeka Muir 14, Cassandra Carpenter 13, Ursula Richards 10) defeated Southern 65 (Robyn Jennings 14, Teresa Kinross 12, Gilly Hendrie 9)

After this match the Tigers face Norwood, Woodville and West in their last 3 matches. To have any chance of claiming fifth position they must win this match to make their task a little easier. South has Eastern, Forestville and Centrals and they still have an outside chance if results fall their way. South beat West in an upset but lost to North whereas Southern hammered the Lions but succumbed to Forestville with a disappointing first and last quarter performance in their last outings. Only 5 points separated the sides in Round 6, but since then Southern has improved and would start marginal favourites in this match. They have a much stronger chance of participating in finals if they win this encounter.
