Women's Game Previews - Round 14

(Includes Round 5 results when the Teams last played)

North Adelaide Rockets v South Adelaide, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Hillcrest
North 91 (B Lock 20, M Stabile 17, J Hill 11, S Zecevic, S McKay, K Williams 8) defeated
South 74 (C Johnson 23, C Carpenter 21, S Peddle 8)

North will be keen to sweep the weekend round of games and return to the top five which they have occupied for most of the season until their recent loss. Coach Mike McKay will need to eliminate the low scores that have been posted during some of the quarters this season. These lapses have hurt the team and cost them victory in a number of close encounters. South have been scheduled to take on finals-bound West Adelaide prior to this match, and they face a tough round of matches over coming weeks. If they fail to win this weekend they will be playing for pride, a finals berth out of the question.

Southern Tigers v Central Districts Lions, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Morphett Vale
Southern 101 (R Cutri 18, S Gates 16, M Cunningham, G Hendrie, A Spencer 14) defeated
Centrals 55 (A Land 13, S Hocking 12, F Perso 11, M Eime 9)

When the sides last met, Southern were successful 101 – 55, that score their highest for the season and largest winning margin posted against any other team. Centrals’ form in recent weeks has improved and as result the losing margins have decreased. Lions Coach Winston Folland will look for his players to support Amber Land who has been a prolific scorer over recent games. Without that support the Lions will be in for another tough afternoon. Southern will want hold onto the 5th place or climb higher during the remainder of the season.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Norwood Flames, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Port Adelaide
West 68 (N Martin 19, S Woosnam 16, I Sourlatzis 14, Lisa Coleman 7) defeated
Norwood 56 (R Duke 20, R Herrick 14, A MacDermot 11)

Both clubs should enter this match off expected wins but with the makeup of each side uncertain due to either injury or absence it is difficult to predict the result. The winner of this contest will occupy outright third position if results go as expected the night before. The return of playing Coach Sam Woosnam will be a big factor for the Flames to counter and guard Irene Sourlatzis has been in good form scoring 23 points against Centrals. Norwood may have the trump card in Rachel Herrick with the absence of West Centre Kerrin Webber.

Woodville Warriors v Sturt Sabres, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at St Clair
Sturt 55 (C Burgess 15, M Bowley 12, B Farley 7, A Maycock, C Holmes 6) defeated
Woodville 46 (K Perkas 14, M O’Neil, A White 9)

Sturt will start warm favourites in this match but Woodville would be buoyed by their recent form, especially the game against the 2nd placed Eagles when they fell short in that match by only 5 points, 58 – 53, when Woodville hurt by a low scoring 1st quarter. The Warriors’ MacKenzie O’Neil may see court time guarding Sabres Centre Monique Bowley that could prove to be a daunting task given her recent form. Warrior guards April Brown and Alissa Hampton will hope to repeat their form against South when they both recorded their highest score for the season.

Eastern Mavericks v Forestville Eagles, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Mount Barker
Forestville 82 (M Newley 38, J Fergus 17, J Bow 11) defeated
Eastern 49 (T Madgen 22, J Fricker 7, J Robbertsen, D Wilcox 6)

Both clubs will be desperate for victory, with Forestville keen to claim top spot before the end of the season and the Mavericks looking to win to keep their finals hopes alive. Eastern will be hoping that Mia Newley hits a bag of points against Southern the night before after going scoreless against the Rockets the week before. If she fires up on Saturday night they would be looking for her to have a quiet one on Sunday. Last time the sides met Newley was the round high scorer with 38 points. Eastern were blown away after only scoring 7 points in the 2nd quarter and 7 points in the last, wrecking any chance of victory. Forestville has only dropped two games this season with their quest for back to back titles still on track.
