Men's Game Reviews - Round 10

Eastern Mavericks v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Mount Barker
With so much at stake for both clubs, the Eastern Men were outgunned by the Rockets to the tune of 22 points (102 -80) with the majority of the damage being done after halftime when they were outscored 50 – 31. During the game North was able to score at will, inside the keyway, particularly in the second half. North's Pero Vasiljevic who has previous NBL experience with 5 clubs and has also played in Italy, Germany, Poland, France and Sweden scored freely, finishing with 30 points at 48% and hauled in 17 rebounds. Vasiljevic was well supported by Nick Hambour, Michael Zorich and Rhys Elliott who finished with 14 points in 18 minutes of court time. Eastern's shining light was Shane Breheny who finished with a season high 28 points. North set up the win with a dominant third quarter.

Forestville Eagles v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Wayville
West and Forestville staged another thrilling encounter as they did in Round 2 when the Eagles prevailed by the slenderest of margins, 1 point (69 – 68). Throughout this match, little separated the two sides and in the last quarter, the scores were level (64 – 64) with 5.45 remaining. Prior to that point, the Eagles held the ascendancy in the first half, up by as many as 9 points in the first quarter and 10 points several times during the second period. At ¾ time only 1 point (54 – 53) separated the two teams after West had its most productive quarter which returned 21 points, Brad Davidson and Kurtis Phillips both hitting 3 pointers during this period to edge the Bearcats in front of the Eagles.  With just under 5 minutes to play Doug MacDonald Taylor, playing his 200th CABL game, converted a foul shot which was the last score for the Eagles for the game. West scored the final 9 points of the match which included a 3 pointer from Anthony Spadavecchia reversing the result of Round 2.

South Adelaide Panthers v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Marion
Norwood set up the win in the later part of the first quarter and by winning the second quarter 26 – 17. South matched it with their more fancied opponents due mainly to the efforts of guard Sammy Gazzo who finished the game high scorer with 32 points. It is the second time this season he has hit that many points - the last time against Forestville in Round 8. Norwood's victory was due to a more balanced team performance where it had a number of players in double figures. Keith Krause was its leading scorer in his best return for the season, his 22 points coming in 22 minutes of court time. Corey Ottey and Sam Grantham both had good games to back up Krause and both did the bulk of their scoring in the first half with Grantham compiling 10 points in the 1st quarter. Gazzo put together 13 points in the third including a buzzer beater allowing South to close to within 9 points. Grantham scored the first basket of the last quarter and from that point, South were never able to seriously challenge for the remainder of the game. The Flames claimed their 5th win in a row to join West Adelaide and Sturt at the top of the table.

Central Districts Lions v Woodville Warriors, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Starplex
Woodville earned its 3rd win of the season with a big third quarter where it outscored the Lions 22 – 10. In a reversal of last week's form it had a shocker from outside the arc returning only 1 basket from 19 shots taken. The Lions had a much more productive night hitting ten 3 point shots from 18 taken @ 55.8%.  In a telling statistic Woodville scored 60 of their 83 points from inside the paint whereas the locals were held to just 24 points from the keyway. Imports Brady Brink (Warriors) and Wade Pidock (Lions) both improved their numbers from last round finishing with 17 points and 23 points respectively. Jacob Templeton, in his 2nd match of the season scored 18 points to be the only other player in double figures for the Lions, other than Pidock. Woodville finished with 4 players in double figures and outscored the Lions in the last 3 quarters of the game to claim victory.

Southern Tigers v Sturt Sabres, Sat, May 29th, 8.15pm at Morphett Vale
Sturt jumped out of the blocks in the first half to set up a convincing win against the Tigers by 27 points (85 – 58). Sturt's Darren Ng did not play but his brother Marcus rejoined the team and was in the starting five. Tom Daly (Sabres) was damaging in the first quarter with two 3 pointers and went on to be the game high scorer with 24 points to just pip Jacob Holmes on 23 points. Holmes again finished with a double double, pulling down 14 rebounds. After a run of 6 points by Shane Boal the margin was trimmed to 9 points at the midpoint of the third quarter but baskets to Holmes and Mark Bauer soon pushed the margin back out. The last quarter opened with a basket to Holmes and the difference was extended to a comfortable 20 points (69 -49). The win moves Sturt into equal top spot but left Southern with its 5th loss in succession stranded in 9th position.
