Women's Game Reviews - Round 10

Eastern Mavericks v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Mount Barker
North Adelaide won a hard fought contest (77 – 69) where victory to either team offered a chance to secure 5th spot and a mini break on the rest of the challengers fighting for a finals berth. A narrow margin separated the two sides at the end of the first quarter, with North up by a solitary point (20 – 19). Eastern hit back in the second to be up by 2 points (38 – 36) at half time. The North shooters did the damage in the 3rd when they connected on six 3 pointers Tahnee Mansfield and Bec Lock with 2 and Shannon McKay and Tayla Corbell with 1 each. It was in this period that Eastern fell behind by 11 points - the biggest break of the night. Alex Wilson and Tess Madgen scored the first 7 points of the last quarter for Eastern before Jo Hill broke the drought for North, but a 3 pointer to Madgen with 3.36 left North only 1 point in front. Mansfield scored the next basket followed by a 3 pointer to North's Kirsty Williams, and this margin then proved too much for Eastern to overcome in the final minutes.

Forestville Eagles v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Wayville
Forestville stitched up second place on the premiership table and kept the Bearcats at fourth when they defeated them 81 – 71. The Bearcats entered the game minus playing coach Sam Woosnam and centre Kerrin Webber who was not available through injury. Throughout the match, Forestville were able to establish mini breaks with Jess Mahony, Mia Newley and Jess Fergus responsible for the bulk of their scoring. During a period in the first quarter they led 16 – 8, the second 32 – 19, the third 54 – 36 before the Bearcats hit back in the last to be down by only 6 points (75 – 69) after a basket from Trudy Holland with 1.53 remaining. Three point shots in the last from Lisa Coleman, Irene Sourlatzis and Ashlea Vordermaier got the Bearcats back into the contest. Six of the last eight points were scored by Forestville to deliver West Adelaide consecutive defeats for the first time this season.

South Adelaide Panthers v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Marion
Norwood had an up and down game against the Panthers but still recorded victory although leading scorer Jess Foley did not see action. The Panthers skipped away early and after a basket by Taya Crockford with 4 minutes played led 12 – 4. For the remainder of the quarter, Norwood reduced the margin but still found themselves down 5 points at the break 21 -16. In the second quarter the Flames were able to wipe out the deposit and went into the half time break up 35 – 31. At three quarter time only a basket separated the two sides with South able to stay in touch, with Claire Johnson doing the most of the scoring and finishing the game high scorer with 28 points. Early in the last period Norwood had a number of scorers in Rachel Herrick, Cara Boothey, Amanda MacDermot and Rebecca Duke, and skipped clear until three 3 point shots by South's Ursula Richards and Johnson (2) saw them regain the lead 56-55. From that position with Duke scoring the majority of the baskets to conclude the contest, Norwood were able to extend the margin to run out 9 points in front.

Southern Tigers v Sturt  Sabres, Sat, May 29th, 6.30pm at Morphett Vale
The Tigers have now pulled off two upsets in a row, taming both the Bearcats and the Sabres and in the process ending Sturt's unbeaten run as the only side not to have lost a game. Southern opened with a blistering first quarter outscoring the Sabres 20 – 9. The first basket of the night was a 3 pointer to Teresa Kinross (Tigers) and this set the pace for the remainder of the period in which Southern's Robyn Jennings and Madelaine Cunningham were both active. Jennings went on to be the game high scorer with 20 points. Hannah Richards for the Sabres scored all her points in the second quarter and by halftime the deficit was only 2 points in favour of the home team, 31 – 29. Late in the third after Caroline Burgess (Sturt) got amongst the points the Sabres had broken away 49 – 41 at the last break.  In the last quarter the Sabres could only manage 3 baskets whereas the Tigers had multiple avenues of scoring. When Cunningham hit a 3 pointer with 2.38 left the Tigers regained the lead. She then converted a pair of free throws with 9 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 3 point buffer (59 – 56).  Burgess launched a 3 point prayer with 1 second left, it failed to hit the target giving Southern their third win in succession.
